Yes it's normal.. it's a suzuki POS.

 

Have you put a slip-on on the bike?

 

First of all, it sounds like the pops and flames are coming out of your exhaust pipe. That makes this an "after-fire." It happens when fuel gets into the exhaust and ignites somewhere in the exhaust pipe. It is usually just a sign of a rich mixture. It can also be cause by improper valve timing (exhaust valves stay open too long after the intake valves open). Emission controls can sometimes cause this when they get clogged, or old.

A little is perfectly normal; but if it is excessive you might take a closer look at the above mentioned issues.

Personally I absolutely love the sound! Few things sound as good as a sport twin popping on deceleration. The only downfall is you might burn, or blow, the packing out in your exhaust cannisters quicker.

 

i've never seen a TLR that didn't pop and shoot flames on decel...

 

Thats the thought that came to mind when I opened this thread.

 

3700 rpm, right? It's the damned PAIR valve. It's there to introduce air into the exhaust to help with emissions control. Primary reason I sold my TLS.

A lot of bikes have them, some including TLs have aftermarket kits to replace the valve with a blockoff plate, but they aren't generally fun to install.

By the way, that is one of the best things about owning a TLR. You can prevent it by not engine braking when you stop, but man does it sound beastly when your tearing it up in the canyons

my TLR always backfired, it's normal.

 

Normal for a big V. I love the sound of my 51.

 

Most vtwins pop, burble, and occasionally backfire while decelerating. On my bike that particular "character" went away, after custom fuel/ignition mapping.

 

I'm going to dissagree on it being normal. My TLR backfires like a gunshot right around 5k if I decel completely off the gas. I've heard the PAIR valve and leaking exhaust on the rear cylinder where it goes through the swingarm are two main causes. This winter I hope I can actually take it apart I'm going to check valve clearance, remove the PAIR valve, replace the exhaust gaskets and sync the throttle bodies. Hopefully that will get rid of it.
