A friend of mine is looking to get into biking. I told him to start small and brought him to take a look at the EX500 and GS500. But what really caught his eye was the YZF600R. I know it's not as powerful as the R6 but from what I've heard it's still a really fast bike. I really don't know if it's a suitable beginner bike. Is there a huge difference between starting with a 500 and the YZF600R? This guy's been riding a 750cc cruiser around for about 3 months so he's no completely oblivious. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, it is a bit tamer than the R6, but don't underestimate it. It still makes almost 95 hp and is a beast over 8,000 rpm. So tell him to respect its power if he really wants this bike. And it's one hell of a bike!

he would probably be better off w/a 500 but if he is set on the yzf then there is not much you can do, just tell him to take it easy for awhile.

It is true that if you are responsible you can handle any bike, you just have to respect it and know not to push yourself past your riding limits.
I dont know about a newb handling a 500cc MotoGP bike, but yea pretty much. I've seen busa newbs, r1 newbs, all sorts of big bike small experience newbies.

It isnt the best situation for learning, but yea...
