Our security manager just sent this out. Intersting how technolgy in the wrong hands can do to you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic
technology.

GPS: A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had their
car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on
the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted
to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote
control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the
dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked
and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it.
Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find
your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if
your GPS were stolen.

MOBILE PHONES
I never thought of this.......

This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile
phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell
phone, credit card, wallet... Etc... was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him
what had happened, hubby says 'I received your text asking about our Pin
number and I've replied a little while ago.'

When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money
was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to
text 'hubby' in the contact list and got hold of the pin number.. Within 20
minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.

Moral of the lesson:
Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact
list.

Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc....

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts,
CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being text by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be
sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't
reach them, be very careful about going places to meet 'family and friends'
who text you.

Some of this stuff is really avoidable, I mean they been breaking into cars at football games since leather has been replaced by a helmet. As with anything, out of sight, out of mind.
Same goes for the handbags-but cell phones these days have password protection-I suggest people use it.

Now using GPS to track your wife and children on a "family" account with Sprint is just messed up!

Most people carry their auto registration or proof of insurance in their glovebox. If you're one of these people you don't need to worry about writing your home address on the bottom of your GPS. This is why a good (or even just competent) cop will have someone check out your house when he's taking the report on your car being stolen. If he or she doesn't ask, you should, but this is a very minor threat. The overwhelming majority of people who steal a car just want the car. Bringing a truck to clean out a house (on a weekend afternoon) unless the job was planned well in advance makes my bullshit detector scream because it's going to attract so much attention.

About the cell phone...it doesn't take a criminal genius to find out who you're closest to. Scroll through your recent calls list and see how long it would take a stranger to find out your spouse. But you can and should use the ICE identifier in your address book to make it a lot easier for emergency personnel to contact your family if you're suddenly incapacitated.

I'm most concerned about a security manager passing along spam. This kind of crap helps no one.

Hell in Germany it's illegal! And I believe most of Europe too.

A code lock on your phone and GPS will slow down a smart thief and completely stop a dumb one.

I've read that the ICE in your cell is worthless. LEOs and EMTs have better things to do than rifle through your shit to find a contact. Besides, the county and state all have that info already. You'd be surprised how much info the state can find on you in short order when they need to.

The guys I know working in the field use it regularly. LEO's and EMT's use it to primarily to assist the ER team. If you show up unconscious in an ER the faster they can get the important points on your medical history the better your chances will be.

About the county and state having all that info - it hasn't been like that anywhere I've lived. The government doesn't know where I or my wife work, or even our home phone since we use VOIP and aren't in any of the local phone directories.

Its kinda stupid if you still need GPS directions to your own house...
:eek:nfloor so true, but some folks...(myself included when gettting lost in the middle of "God knows where" Germany), need it from time to time.

I just program the town I live in as home, as opposed to my specific address. Not because I'm worried about thieves or privacy though, I'm just too lazy and I can usually find my way home once I'm in town... :slaugh

Emergency personnel don't contact the IRS or state income tax office. If they did, the information would only be accurate to the beginning of the year and there are restrictions on how 1040 information can be released. The utilities have jobs and phone numbers from when we moved here years ago. Do you give a work phone updates to your utilities every time you get a new job? :bitchslap

And tracking down either one, even if it was possible, would take up a hell of a lot more time and effort than scrolling through the address book on a cell phone.

The way this used to work is a cop would be sent to your house to see if anyone was home. If no one was, they'd check neighbors to see if anyone knew how to reach your spouse or someone who could get in touch with your family. Again, it takes a lot longer to do that than to check their cell phone.

You did say that "the government" didn't know where you live or work... sure, no emergency personnel would look to the IRS for your contact info, but rest assured, the federal and state government certainly know where you live and work.

He was clearly referring to the subject at hand. Context is everything.

Actually... yes. I like to have notification when a pipe bursts in my yard, or something else happens that I need to know about (like I forgot to pay my bill for some reason...)

Not on my phone... figure out the 4 digit code to unlock it first before it wipes itself then you can look. Oh wait, no one locks their phone with a security code anymore... >.>

I've never seen that happen. Ever. Not saying it doesn't, but its not/wasn't a normal thing.

And Scissors - you're right, context is everything.

The county and state do have all that info. Just sayin.

Only stupid theives go directly to a home after breaking into a car parked somewhere else. How many homes have 2+ occupants? Where they ALL at the game? The FIRST place cops, pissed off car owner, etc are going to go look for the crook is the car owners home. NOT a good place for crooks to go.

Steal my car if you want, go to my house in the GPS if you want. You can do anything you want on YOUR LAST DAY!!
