A high school sophomore is suing a school district in Indiana after he was suspended for wearing a T-shirt bearing the likeness of an M-16 rifle and the text of the Marine Corps creed, reports the News Sentinel.

Nathan Griggs, 16, was suspended from Fort Wayne Community Schools in March because the tee shirt violated the school’s policy on offensive and violent clothing.

The offensive text, written by a Marine Corps general after the attack on Pearl Harbor, focuses on the relationship between a Marine and his or her rifle, and is also known as "My Rifle."

----Yup, the defenders of the country are all realy just terrible folks repeating a horrible mantra. How dare you have pride in your corps, your weapon, your duty?!
What were you guys thinking? Effective immediately, any reference in the Marine Creed to a "rifle" will be changed to "flower" and all references to there being "Many like it" will have to be deleted so as not to offend the small arms' individuality........

The way things are now, kids are not allowed to figure out how to deal with adversity.
This is the best point, I think. Less and less people are mentally tough.

You must be in the wrong thread...

All parents should have their kids wear these shirts and those like them.
Go ahead, just try sending them all home! I'd rather my kid stay home than go to a school like that.
I was wearing this shirt in a local market here and got dam near knocked out by a old blue haired kady that had to have had a cinder block in her purse. I heard this screechy voice "You should be ashaned of yourself! Thats Fikthy talk " and KABOOM the side of my head felt like a small truck ran into me.....
Got the shirt when the crusty gang was here doing some riding and shooting some insane video for a upcoming movie. Seth did a jump whith a helecopter filming from above and he over did it and narroly missed going into the main rotor. That guy is a absolute hardware store on legs, screws, pins plates rods you name it he probably has it in Titanium and still hasnt learned not ot attemt to fly without a plane :alky :alky

Thats the official logo of Fah Q Racing Jerry Bernardo is the originator. He was a announcer for moto cross action or some moto version of like the GP's Bernardo paintd helmets for most of the pro moto guys and is a heckuva rider.

They had Travis Pastrana, Ricky C. Twitch and my buddy Phill Oveland all doing sick shit up at Kahuku State Motocross Track on the North Shore... Oh and Bubba was with em. the fat dood that is in all the crusty vids.... he is a funny guy does some of the most disgusting things so he gets his 5 minutes of fame in evert crusty vid..... :D

The worst part is that the kid is suing the school, that is rediculous. How should a kid be able to sue a school? Only in America, where half of the lawyers in the world reside.

This thread obviously has its own agenda though.

Heh, I remember I got asked to turn my "Guns don't kill people, People kill people" T-shirt inside out. Also got in a bunch of shit for wearing my Jack Daniel's shirt to school.

School sucks.

Every thing is so p.c. so we should just go around nude.

His parents are suing on his behalf. Doh!
And I would, too!

The Patriot Act has nothing to do with this. These zero tolerance policies greatly pre-date the Patriot Act. The "Political Correctness" movement is to blame for situations like this.

"Mommy, she's wearing a scary t-shirt" :a2

Give me a break.

That is what you do when your rights are violated. Its not like she is suing over a spilled cup of coffee.
I just wanted to point out that the priority of schools these days is anything but on teaching.
We're at a point of total history revisionism simply to avoid offending anyone. We are scant inches from simply rewriting history to make it non-offensive to any group or individual. History in particular is driven by ugle, very non-PC events and peple. But it's become worse to teach the truth than it has to invent the 'truth'.
More over, it's pretty clear that there is a distinction between the message of the kid's shirt and some inappropriate violence promotion.
It's the creed of the USMC, one of our most proud and colorful institutions. Everything the Corps stand for is exactly what America is supposed to stand for- yet obviously some people don't like what we stand for. And those idiots are wielding way too much power in the US. They shouldn't be significant, yet they are.
I just find the entire thing offensive. To equate the creed of one of our military serviced to rap lyric violence, or gang crap, or whatever is an absolute slap in the face to our soldiers. They may be Uncle Sam's Misguided Children, but they stand for what's right in America, and SHOULD be damn proud of their heritage. We ALL should be. For them to call it promoting violence to have the Marine Creed on a shirt if beyond ridiculous.

No, it's much more important than some little coffee burn. Who do you think pays when the school is sued? The community and the kids, not the teacher. Say goodbye to school funding and the programs that it provides kids. Suing over that is totally selfish. Get your record cleared and an apology, but suing hurts hundreds of people that weren't even involved in it.
No, suing is the only thing that gets their attention. Do you think things change unless there is a financial motivator?

I am against frivolous law suits. This is not one.
That's pretty shitty to be suspended for having pride in your Armed Forces. On a lighter note, when I was a junior, I had a shirt that said "fuck you you fucking fuck." I had to turn it inside out about half way through the day. My first couple teachers just laughed at it. You could still read it very easily though when it was inside out.
Schools have dress codes because some sh******s get off telling other people what they can and can't wear.
Unfortunately, because some families can't control their spawn (Columbine), and said spawn don't have the nuts to put up their dukes and fight face-to-face instead of acting like a bunch of p*ssies and gunning unarmed folks down....wellll, it creates an atmosphere of fear in our school system....where prevention (or a reasonable rendition thereof) is the status quo. Unfortunate, but true.

If rules are posted at school that says no student shall wear offending clothing, then it falls to the student(s) to act responsibly as members of the mini society that is school and obey the rules. Failure to do so means he/she is willing to accomodate the consequences, i.e., censure, suspension, expulsion. Same thing happens when they go out into the real world....just that the consequences get a little heavier.

'Nuff said.

Good point, I bet that actually had a lot to do with Columbine.
And what exactly was offensive about the shirt in question???

It would appear the shirt violated school rules by being offensive (hey, some folks don't like guns and whether you hide it behind a Marine's creed or not...it's still a gun, and thereby offensive, to some folks), and/or violent (espousing the use of a firearm by glorifying its use/purpose imbedded in the Marine credo).

Since the school administration perceived the shirt as such and had to invoke the school rules which the student either didn't know, or was just out to challenge....it remains the shirt was deemed offensive and the student was held accountable for his action.

Sad....but what we like to call a truism. Of course it will bring into question the First Amendment right to free speech....but then it could also be argued than in the face of our current situation with violence in schools, that the shirt can fall under the "you can't yell 'fire' in a theater and say you were exercising your freedom of speech" situation. When the perception is such that the action of a few has the potential to endanger the many, that right is subject to interpretation. Another sad truism....thanks to Columbine and other sinister plots that were brought to light before being executed.
