Because you may a LOT more money parting then selling a whole bike.

Fucked up, but that is how it is. A little time with a wrench gets you a LOT more money.

Yea, I've often wondered that too. I am a noob so I figured there was something I didn't understand about it. Makes sense though that you would get more selling parts than a whole bike, if you have the time and patience..

agree + 1000

If they won't show you a pic of the bike or they aren't willing to sell the frame with a title, its because there isn't one and its probably stolen

Saying he rode it all summer just means a guy saw his victim riding it this summer...then took it off his hands

It doesnt have to be stolen to make money from parting it out. I parted out a 1990 C4 Corvette that I bought from an insurance company because my friend crashed his and had the option of buying it back. Paid $3k for it, Sold a bunch of stuff and kept some major parts. The wheels, targa top, glass top, and some other small parts got me $3k. Ive still got the suspension, engine, brake rotars and almost ALL the body work. The seats too. You can make a LOT of money parting things out if you got the time.

+1. If you have the tools and know how it's a great way to make money. It doesn't have to be stolen or illegal. You can even stick with similar models so it's easy.

Dirt bikes are pretty much the same way (except easier to work on, and a bit less money).

It also helps when you post on craigslist and a major forum like corvette.com :D

It's because you have access to a much larger market and you can meet much more specific needs.

When you have a whole bike, you can realistically sell it within a 100-200 mile radius. The farther away the potential buyer is, the less they will offer you, since there are relatively large costs (in time and money) to move 400lbs or so of metal.

If there's a guy across the country that needs one doohicky to get his bike running, he will often be willing to pay a premium to have the part NOW, so long as it is less than the list price of buying from a dealer.

Plus, there are far fewer people looking for new bikes than people needing parts for bikes.

+1. All major forums. Wera forums, make/model specific forums, general forums, local forums (we have orlando forums here). It helps with shipping costs, ebay buy it now, and ebay auction for stuff you can't sell.

you could probably make more if you put it back together. you got hosed on that deal btw.
that thing was only worth $3k running. I can buy 1998-2001 bmw 7 series cars all day for $4-5k. and those were $70k new.
just keep in mind anything american over 5 years old, it's only worth $5k tops in mint condition. corvettes are no exception. nothing amercan holds it's value. even the ford excursions of 4 years ago are going for $5k.

Serpentracer-your figures are based on ???????? totalled vehicles "worth". Because I know my 02 f350 Lariat, crewcab, 4 x 4, diesel is worth alot more than $5000. And it was about $40,000 new

I didnt buy it to make a profit. I bought it solely for the engine, suspension, and steering column for a Work In Progress Hot Rod. I had every intention of LOSING money, in fact I was just going to give away the crap I didnt need, but decided to part it out to recover my initial cost. Turns out I got the corvette for nothing after I sold a few parts. And I still have PLENTY to sell to make myself a profit when I never intended to even get a profit. Sure there are great deals on other makes and model cars out there if your a die hard parting out kind of guy, but I only wanted some of the parts. I wasnt trying to get rich.

I find it hard to believe people make more parting out whole bikes, especially clean ones. If the bikes been wrecked then ya you will make more parting than selling it as a whole.
Old bikes are pretty nice to part out too. When you can only get $2k for a year 2000 sport bike, you can get a chunk of change for the engine, suspension, tach/speedo, forks, frame,a nd sub frame alone. Probably even more than $2k. The wheels, rotors, brake clipers, wiring harness, battery, fairings, etc are all profit!

This isnt really a hard concept to understand you guys.
