There were a lot of bikes on the road yesterday.
I often waved. And a lot of riders waved to me.
But, a lot of riders did not wave.

Will motorcycling become so common - will motorcycles on the road become so numerous - that we stop waving. Just too many riders to wave at?

What a change. When I started riding everybody waved. You could ride all day and not see another motorcyclist. On a lazy weekend ride you might not just wave but stop and get acquainted at the Waffle House - have a cup of coffee and a piece of pecan pie. Make a new friend.

If that's the future I guess I'll just have to adjust..............again. :dunno

I wish things were like they were back then. Funny though I get waves from the squids more often than the cruiser guys. I think they think it'll ruin thier badass image.

I don't know if motorcycles will ever come to be as popular and as common as cars. That might be a good thing though. Its sort of like an club for us. As far as I know there are two types of people: those who have a motorcycle and those who want one.

It's three types: those who have a motorcycle and have crashed / laid it down, those who have a motorcycle and are going to crash / lay it down, and those who want a motorcycle.... :)

I's true is seems waving is becoming less common as it used to be .. but my experience here is it seems more the cruisers who won't wave. In fairness however, most will wave back if I wave to them first .. but it's like we're trying to see who will break the ice and wave first. Oh well, I try to wave no matter what ... only time I won't is if I'm in the middle of braking or changing gears and need my hands on the grips .. and then I'll at least nod.

i sense the cruiser guys are hanging on for dear life, and don't want to let go. I don't get too upset if they don't wave back, it just shows their true character. I wave regardless.

In the last couple of weeks, I've seen quite a few riders, everyone has waved. Everybody waving is one of the neater things I've seen since recently buying a bike. So far, nobody has been stuck up yet. Maybe its because its not summer yet, maybe its rural Idaho. I dunno.

I always waved until I got flipped off by a Harley guy last weekend. So my new rule for myself is I'll only wave at bikes where the riders are only wearing a full face helmet. I always get a wave back from them.

I enjoy this older post a lot more now! http://www.sportbikes.net/forums/showthread.php?t=304675
I wave back with my middle finger too! :)

If I can, I "give the wave" to anything with a motor and less than 4 wheels. If I can not, I try to at least give them a head nod.

I don't give a good d_mn if they return the wave... I got b***** things to worry about. For all I know, they might have waved and I missed it.

Yesterday, I was about 1,000 feet from a stop sign when 10 cruisers, almost all were 2-up, went by. All, every single one, of the pillons were giving me a wave (Not "the wave" because they used their right hand). I felt obligated to wave back... and I laughed for the next three miles.

It was over 60 degrees but heavily overcast and gray but everybody was out knocking off the winter cobwebs.

Wave, don't wave, don't carry grudges. Respect your ride.

I know I have missed other riders waving at me when I was concentrating on traffic around me, changing lanes, etc. If someone doesn't wave I just give them the benefit of the doubt. I always wave if I can. I can't always tell if riders going the opposite direction wave or not 'cuz I don't want to take my eyes off the road just for that. I have noticed occasionally that a chopper guy will give a blatant non-wave, but I figure those guys wouldn't even wave at their own moms, so I don't worry about it too much. :cheers If it makes them cooler to not wave at me, then glad I could help out. LOL :eek:nfloor

I never worry about it too much. I miss folks who are riding as well. Most of the time it's because I'm doing something and paying attention to traffic. Getting ready to make a move.

I think there are a couple of reasons though.

1. Sportbikes - Treat traffic as obstacles. Looking for the line, getting ready to shift lanes and get out of the middle of the group of cars.
2. Cruisers - Crusing with traffic. A part of the flow. More inclined to be relaxed and see the other rider.
3. Cruiser riders - Black gloves, black leather jacket, black chaps. When we wave, you may not see the gloved hand with the black background unless the hand's really waving.
4. New riders - Some folks are new and have to remember to wave. I get that when I'm riding, I'll wave and almost see the expression "Oh, I need to wave too.". My wife says she sees a lot of waving that I miss because it's last second.

When I'm on either of the bikes, I'm paying attention to traffic. Waving to another rider comes second to watching the latte drinking, cell phone yakking, child smacking, makeup applying young lady in the minivan/suv.

Will motorcycling become so common - will motorcycles on the road become so numerous - that we stop waving. Just too many riders to wave at?
Probably. I know in Athens when I was there, no one at all waved to other riders. But there were a lot more riders on two wheeled motorized vehicles (I saw one guy in a grey suit on a TransAlp I think and no helmet).

What a change. When I started riding everybody waved. You could ride all day and not see another motorcyclist. On a lazy weekend ride you might not just wave but stop and get acquainted at the Waffle House - have a cup of coffee and a piece of pecan pie. Make a new friend.
When I started (probably not as far back as you did :D ), my friend taught me to wave. But we used the solidarity salute (fist in the air). When I got back into riding, it was an open handed wave. Threw me off for a few days :)

If that's the future I guess I'll just have to adjust..............again. :dunno
It's either adjust or stagnate. What're you gonna do? :)

I've gotten a lot of positive responses from waving at other riders, but I almost always wave first. Sometimes I feel badly when I'm at a light in 1st and unable to wave to someone driving by. When folks don't wave back, I give them the benefit of the doubt.

I have never had someone give me the finger; I'd have to park my FZ6 on their face if they did that to me. We have enough cagers being dicks to us, why do it to one of our own? Bah.
