Hey everyone! To kind of branch off from the "Gear" post from earlier, I'm posting a poll. I was a bit, um, altered with I posted the original post, and I truly didn't mean to come across as self-righteous and I can promise you, I'm anything BUT that. Almost everyone here is more experienced than I am, and I love learning from you all! I do cringe when I see bikers on difficult roads without a shred of gear on, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, this will be my first time trying to post a poll, so I'm hoping it works.

Ok, about what percentage of your riding time would you say you completely gear up meaning riding pants, jacket, gloves, boots, helmet?

0% (never)
0 - 25% (rarely)
25 - 50% (sometimes)
50 - 75% (most of the time)
75 - 99% (almost always)
100% (all the time on every single ride)

one thing i have noticed from wearing my riding suit (race suit), the public is not capable of understanding why i wear what i wear when ever other rider out there is in shorts t-shirt and sunglasses.

And before the "jeans offer no protection" crowd jumps in, I know jeans offer next to no protection. That's a chance I'm willing to take.
That's the name of the game. Understanding the risk and determining the level of risk you're willing to accept.

An informed choice is a good thing.

I have nothing against someone who chooses to ride without a helmet if he or she is aware of the consequences, but what I will never understand is how the rider could allow the passenger to ride without one (or any gear). The passenger has absolutely no direct control over what the rider does on a bike and regardless of the trust between the rider and the passenger, shit happens... and if lack of protection in any accident caused serious harm or death to someone I cared about I don't know how I could go on with my life knowing I allowed them to be my passenger.

even informed about the risks and lack of control, i am willing to bet the passenger will follow what the rider does.

I voted full gear 25% of the time, but that reflects the fact that 75% of my riding is commuting. So, sure, full gear for the twistys. But showing up to work with my 2 piece leather suit is not a great option. For commuting: helmet, earplugs, gloves, textile armored jacket, jeans, cruiser boots.

I do it 5 days a week... I wear my riding pants over my khaki's, my leather jacket over my dress shirt, and I store my dress shoes and tie in my backpack. Granted, I don't know what your commute is like, but giving a damn about what my co-workers think when I walk into the office fully-geared is much lower on my priority list than surviving a 25 minute commute on the highway every morning.

Jus' sayin'
