Kerosene is the best for Ninja 500 chains.

WD-40 works fine also. Clean it up real good then put a good coat of chain lube on it. Don't spray too much on or it'll fly all over your bike. Chain should be cleaned every 300-500 miles. Speaking of which, I need to clean mine again. Sucks when you're commuting, chain has to be cleaned every other week.

Motul makes a good chain cleaner and lube. It's all I use. :)

Yup. Works wonders for me. I just cleaned my rear sprocket, and I didn't know what color it was supposed to be. Works great. Just don't use it as a lubricant, only a cleaning solvent. I use OEM Honda Chain lube on my drive chain.
