The bike was designed to run 87 octane, but that was before oxygenated and E10 fuels. If you're putting in non-ethanol fuel, go with 87 and don't worry about it. If you're filling up with E10 or oxygenated fuel, go with 89 or higher for the knock resistance. In the cooler months, (below 27C), you could likely run 87 and not worry about it.
