The music program napster or what ever it's name is is using DRM in it's files and some of these files are also being spread with file sharing programs. That's windows Digital Rights Management licenseing scheme. When the alloted time runs out on the media you got from your pay for mp3 music system thing the DRM will delete the file off your drive!

It happene'd to the webmaster of a windows tech site! Here's a link to the story. In his case it wiped his entire music folder out! --> http://www.bit-tech.net/column/14/

They ain't no work around to that, that is exactly what MS made the thing for. it's a code encrypted directly into the media file. After a set time period the license runs out and the file will not play. Some versions apparently delete themselves when the expiration is past.

I've downloaded porn videos a few times that when you click properties on them there's a 3rd tab on the top of the file with license on the tab. Open it and you will see who the owner is and when it expires. It also will ask for your user password if you used a spoofing proggy to download the file. It's a way they can make there file's useless to people that are gaining access to them illegally. These files also cannot be modified in any form that will alter or remove the DRM, I've tried re-encoding it with several encoding proggys and even tried to convert them to a different file type, no good. It gives an error when you try to save it. :(

Worse yet is the next version of windows thats coming out, it will have a key and registration that if not properly regestered with MS it will deactivate the drive!

Microsoft’s Bill Gates has gone on record that the next big version of Windows, codenamed Longhorn, will have something called Trusted Computing (www.trustedcomputinggroup.org) at its very core. This is a cross-industry initiative, which incorporates the successor to Microsoft’s infamous Palladium. The idea is to have authentication and encryption chips hardwired into your PC, so the OS can control what you can and can’t do. That way, if your subscription to Microsoft Word runs out, it could disappear from your system. You can forget about writing any more documents, and maybe even viewing the ones you’ve already written as well.

and if they really do try to pull that shit, you KNOW a hacker will find a way around it.

Not like it affects me any, though. All my music is legal, I make the MP3 from my own CDs, and if worse comes to worse, I'll work on a Linux machine. The only downside to Linux is the lack of gaming ability.

^^^

Yah, hackers can find their way into anything, and around anything. If even the military computers aren't 100% un-hackable, then nothing is 100% un-hackable.

even if your music is legal it may still affect you.. wasn't there an issue with the Beastie Boys album in the UK where once you loaded the disk in your comp it would not let you rip the tracks to your comp?? I think it exploited the autorun feature if I remember correctly...

There's software that will record sound from your computer... so as it's playing from the unpaid version, it can be recorded onto a new format. So yeah, there's always a way around things. One easy one would probably to set your computer date back so it thinks it hasn't expired yet, but then there's patches for stuff like that...

And yeah, what is this "music store" people speak of?? lol.

My next OS = Linux

I really like the compatibility of Windows, everybody uses it, but with that kind of crap...
+1

I like Lunux. Anytime i set up a web server i use nothing but Linux. It's much more stable and i like the fact it is open source. Only prob is, windows is so damn compatable with everything, it makes it all so easy. :D

Kazaa. Thats yer problem. Kazaa, land of fake files and trouble by the free truck load...

Try DC++, I transfer several hundred gigs a month and have yet to get a virus or a wrong named file. The way the system works is what makes the difference. There all privatly owned hubs. Which does a few things, 1st makes it illegal for any outside athority to mess with you. 2nd allows the hub owners to police it. you fake share or have bs files you get banned. It's the best file share system I have ever used. Plus they all have chat and most of the better hubs will have killer conversations going on constantly.

Its a riot in some of them charecters crackin jokes and teasin each other.... gets outta hand at which time a bot tells everyone to behave or be booted LOL some of the bots have a sense of humor like Robbin Williams they can be hilarious with there responses to certain "key words" :D

Heh... open source, Ain't gonna be that way for long. There's a movement underway to change that.

what if you use windows 3.1? i doubt they would have anything like that back in da day.
Ha, that would work fine until you connected to the net. Don't fool yourselves guys. It's a nasty place on the internet, big brother is here and watching us. *its 1994 now.

I can assure you they will or already have a tiny little cookie implanted on your os telling them everything they want to know about you and your comp... Did you know that the government spooks have the trchnology to watch you from your monitor on a connected comp? It isn't any hi res shit but I wouldn't reccomend doing any illegal activity in front of a connected comp.......

rereading what hawaii said

You use your standered computer to connect online

then use 3.1 to play pornos, mp3s etc... without having the expiration date.

better hope the computers "clock" doesn't work because the DRM is on a timer......and how would that help if the file is blocked by a password thats encrypted with 128bit security coding. alot of the new porn files (wmv) are using DRM to secure the files. it's much cheaper for them to protect there business that way since any win box can do DRM than it is for them to spend $100,000+ per year on network security, even if you spoof your way onto the site, manage to download a huge ass file what good is it if you can't see it... LOOL

don't forget the fact any divx file won't work be playable on 3.1 since divx isn't compatable with any os before w98

plus the newer equipment more than likely won't have drivers compatable with 3.1

I ain't paranoid. I am just stating the facts, were heading toward a new world and it ain't kansas dorothry... thank the carpet jockeys for that.
