So I was out today for a ride and I was in the country on a nice twisty road having a good time. As I was riding I told myself that I needed to keep deer in the back of my mind because this time of year they really start moving around here.

So I am doing about 60mph into an easy right hander I was just entering the corner getting ready to get off the foot and hand brake and low and behold a damn big eight point buck jumps out about 30 feet in front of me. My reflex made me press the foot break a bit more and since I was already applying it that caused the back tire to lock up, well because it was a reflex that made me hit the break more, naturally my reflex relaxed, and at that time the bike started to slide right and the rear tire caught traction and spit me left and right a few times. I got it under control pretty quick and got it standing straight up but by this time I was heading for the ditch so I just got back on the brakes went in the ditch and kept it upright and got it to a stop.

Pretty scary experiance, the stuff I learned in the MSF course saved me. I got off the bike walked around for a bit to calm down and look over the scene to see what I did wrong and what I did right to learn from this. Needless to say I knew I had to get back on the horse right away so I started cruising through some more corners to make sure I would not get spooked.

Stuff like this is why I always wear my helmet, jacket, riding pants, gloves and boots.

MSF teaches (at least the class i took) not to let off the rear brake once the tire is locked, you are to slide it all the way to a stop to prevent a high side. i guess flat spotting a tire is better than potentially getting tossed.

That is what they taught me also but I did not release the brake to correct the slide or right the bike it was more of a reflex, I know to keep the rear tire locked if the bike is at an angle.

MSF taught you not to panic also, and to be ready for the unexpected and to look ahead....all off which it seems you did.
Amen brother, I have been to a few race schools in my Trans Am and I learned really quickly about looking ahead and through the turn and it is just as beneficial on two wheels. If I was not looking through the turn ahead I would have probably slide right into a telephone pole or panicked because I would not have seen the deer till I was right up on it and that would have been bad.

I impressed you took time to count the points on the deer..your eyes are of eagle.
He was so pissed off he shot it and ate it over the campfire that night. The rack is now mounted to the bars. :lao

Glad a bad situation didnt turn into an even worse situation.

Of course it depends on the situation, but on the backroads I ride, Id be very scared of standing it up and going into the oncoming lane as many of the corners are blind and hitting a deer would be a bit better than hitting a car head-on. I probably would have looked through the turn and steered around the deer, but of course depends on the situation.

Good you made it out ok nonetheless.

had a deer jump out about 30 feet in front of me about 2 months back and I was leading 2 other people, I heard tires screech and almost took it in the butt from an R1, glad you made it out ok too!

glad to hear everything worked itself out and you reacted, and re-reacted to get out of a potentially bad situation.. maybe you should pick a new road to ride? with less deer?
Thanks for the wishes everyone and I would pick a road with less dear but in the middle of Illinois those roads do not exist or are hard to find, this is one of the very few roads within 75 miles that has nice curves and a good surface to ride on.

MSF teaches what you SHOULD do. Even over a 3-day course, its simply impossible for them to teach anything thats going to become second-nature and overcome panic reflex in the short amount of time you're there.

Once you know what you SHOULD do, its up to you to practice and make those things second-nature. It doesn't happen overnight.

I swear I'm gonna rip my hair out if I hear about one more person saying "I had to lay it down."

Kudos for keeping it up and wearing gear!!!!!!!
I agree... I also hate when people slam into a truck at 60 mph and say that they "dropped their bike."

"Dropping your bike" means you were trying to move it around in the driveway and it slipped and fell over, or something like that.
