Break parts cleaner IS very nasty stuff. When I was working as a mechanic, it stripped a ceramic inlay right off my wedding ring. That stuff is supposed to last for 15+ years! Carb Cleaner, or starter fluid is what you should use. That's what the stuff is made for! Just be sure to use it moderately.

I've never seen starter fluid do that. I would imagine that what happened was too much "fluid" hydro-locked a cylinder. Starter fluid is basicly Ether. You want it to be in gaseous form when it goes into the engine. Not still liquid.
