looks like asking for a grenaded engine. air-cooled + turbo = only works in Porshces and airplanes. or Porsche powered airplanes. i wonder if the new counterbalanced 1200 will bolt in there?

TURBOS: 8 VALVES, TWO PISTONS, UNKNOWN TERRITORY

When you undertake a turbo project with a brand new bike, especially the first new boxer of the millennium, chock full of expensive German parts housed in a vertically split crankcase, you get a little nervous with visions of broken rings, blown head gaskets and other terminal explosions. We really shouldn't have worried as BMW made this one tough puppy.

air cooling has nothing to do with it.....

I agree that a turbo'd air-cooled twin is a risky proposition, especially a boxer, with it's weird power pulses. Twins are significantly more difficult to boost than their inline-4 counterparts for many reasons....but....

These guys seem to know what they're talking about.....I'd have to see a streetable one to make an educated judgement, but maybe they're on to something?

I don't really see it being marketable to very many people, though. Yeah, maybe some of the BMW owners out there want more power, but won't most of those people just buy a faster bike?

My Busa makes more torque at 4000rpm than a boosted BMW ever will, and it costs hlaf as much. Any new literbike would wipe it's ass with the BMW, even after you boosted the eyeballs out of it. Just doesn't make sense to me....

I realize this is an old thread but I found the comment interesting since the R1100S with the "new" high cam engine was/is water-cooled.

Air-cooled grenade? Back in 1978, I dropped an early ATP kit using a RayJay turbo onto a first generation R1100RS (1977 model). Daily driver to work and back and up to 150mph on the freeways using the "S" 2.91 final drive. No water, no methanol at 5,500 ft asl in South Africa. Deep oil pan with extra cooling fins to help with the oil temperature, double clutch springs to hold the power and performance valve springs to control float at 8000rpm. Oh, and rod bearing shells from the BMW 2.0litre 4-banger which were wider than the stock bike shells. Fired up every morning without fail and ran like a rocket or tooled around town quite happily.
