In most shift drum style transmissions, there is a cam on the side of the drum and a spring loaded roller. This is called the shift detent. Its use to really hold the drum into place to vibration and such will prevent the drum from turning and switching gears. In order for this detent to work, your shift mechanism must be properly in spec so that you have the same amount of travel forward, and backward with out actually shifting the gear. When you lift up on the shifter peg, does it take more or less effort or travel to pull up on the peg as opposed to pushing down on it?
