When replacing tires on a bike do you replace both of them at the same time even though the front is still pretty good or just the one? How many miles do you go before getting new tires?

i tend to replace both at the same time. that way i have both tires on the same number of heat cycles and the same wear pattern on them. I'll be happy to get 5k out of my PP's.

Usually sport bikes wear out two rears for each front. Maybe 3-5k from a rear and 6-10k from a front depending on the bike, the tire, and how you ride. There's no reason to replace a front that's half worn especially if you keep using the same tires (matched model) front and rear. I replace one at a time unless they happen to both have wear bars showing at the same time.

I usually use two rears to one front.
On M-1's I get about 5k out of the rear.
W/Z6's I get about 10k out of the rear.

Yeah, as stated it all depends. A standard rule is two backs to a front.

But you should always try to keep the same tire on both wheels... mixing and matching can have very negative effects...

And yeah- some heavier bikes wear through the front faster, and it really depends on your riding style a lot, and what pressures you run in your tires. Many people run too low a pressure and wear through tires too fast. Especially on the highway... if you go up about 5-7 psi for highway trips, you can almost double the distance you can go without wearing flat spots in tires, even really sticky ones...

Yea thanx for all the help. I got this quote from the scumbags at advanced kawasaki, and they gave me an estimate for both front and rear, mounting and balancing for 390. And mind you that this is a ex500, not 600+ plus bikes where tires cost more and labor is more. So this was the breakdown---- front 90 + rear 123 = 213 ---- tax at 8% sor around 25 tax comes to 238. Now the [email protected]%#ing labor is 152 DOLLARS. Omg im going to personally go over there a kick them in the spot where their nuts should be. Sorry :) just venting.

Where are you in CA? Bike dealers are not the best place to buy tires. Is there a Cycle Gear near you?

http://www.cyclegear.com/stores/location_ca.cfm

They have decent prices on tires and mounting/balancing (about $15 each) if you bring the wheels in off the bike. Learn how to do this and save big $$ over time.

+1 to that! I got a quote (not for the tires, just for the mounting and balancing) from my local stealership and the conversation went something like this:
Stealership: hello, cycle shack, how may I help you?
Me: Hello, I need to get 2 tires mounted, I have….
Stealership: that would be the parts department please hold….
Me: wait I need mounting not tires!
Stealership: *playing crappy hold music* (for 10 minutes)
Stealership: hello, cycle shack, how may I help you?
Me: ummm I want a price on mounting 2 tires and balancing.
Stealership: That would be the shop, let me transfer you.
Stealership: *playing crappy hold music* (for another 10 minutes)
Stealership: Shop speaking …
Me: Ya, I was wondering how much it would cost if I brought in the tires off my bike to get a new set mounted and balanced.
Stealership: That would be 80$ a tire for mounting and balance.
Me: I don’t want to buy tires from you, just have ones that I have mounted…
Stealership: I know, that’s the standard mounting fee for outside tires…
Me: OK, what if I buy the Pirellis from you?
Stealership: Sorry, we only sell OEM tires and Meltzer and you get the 5$ discount on the mounting and balancing.
Me OK, quote me for a set of meltzers for my ninja 250
Stealership: Ok…. Hold on a sec…. yes here we are its going to come up to about 372$
Me: HAHAHAHahhahaAHHA (gasp) HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA
Me: that’s what it cost me to get 4 tires on my SUV
Stealership: Well we are the only shop around here that doses MC tires; we can charge what we want.
Me: Ok whatever dude, I am never going to drop another cent in that shop again. *click*

Ok rant done
ranting mostly because I just got 2 flats :urowned

Ohh the pain. I got another pilot power for my rear tire and got analy raped. I took rear rim off bike and brought rear rim alone to shop. The tire was 195 freakin bucks and putting it on the rim was 40 bucks. DAMN I got a guy in upstate NY who will take rims off bike and put the same tire on for 170. I brought the stinking rim in myself off the bike. They did 15 minutes of labor to put tire on rim. The 190 for the tire was absurd. If only i didn't have the blow out of a brand new tire maybe i wouldn't have been so pissed.

Most shops and dealers don't want to mount tires bought somewhere else is because they can be held liable if something happens to that tire while your riding.

Just do them yourself, Its a very easy process.

I only replace what is worn and am not too concerned with using the same brand/model together either never had any ill effects from not. Only concern is to not mix radial and bias ply tires.
