Pilot sports are, IIRC, engineered for the track, and sacrafice a lot of life for that. Pilot Powers are a more "all around" tire, which on the whole and not when focused on a single narrow aspect (riding 100% all out on a track) are better for riders.

Or I could be full of shit. This is just what's been told to me, and I'm relaying on, now.

Pilot Powers are more of a track tire. Pilot Sports are more of an all-around tire that compromises grip and better wear. The Sports that came on my sv1k were awful IMO. The rear would slip way too easily especially in the wet. I thought the Powers cost more than the Sports, but I just checked one site and you're right.

I've heard too many complaints about abnormal (uneven) wear on BT014's especially fronts. I've heard nothing but good things about Pilot Powers. I just got Metzlers for my sv1k. Sportec M3 front and Z6 rear. Before anyone says not to mis-match tires, a Metzler rep said this combo is fine. I ran M1 fronts and Z6 rears on my sv650 for several sets with no issues. The Z6 gives enough grip and wears better. Anyway, after a couple thousand miles on the 1k, no complaints. Way better than the Pilot Sports.

I STRONGLY recommend the Metzeler Z6. I ran those on my SV1K and they were great. Sticky enough for anything I could ever want to do on the street, and I rode them hard. I railed that SV in the twisties, and the Z6 never slipped on me once. I sold the SV with about 2500 miles on the rear tire, and I could see almost no wear at all.

They usually last about 6-7k miles, at least on the SV. The Pilot Powers should last about 3500-4000.
