SAYLORVILLE, Iowa -- Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that killed two people on the Saylorville Dam.

Early Thursday morning, witnesses told officials a biker was speeding across a bridge with a passenger.

Officials said the motorcycle missed a curve and hit a guardrail. A man and woman were thrown from the bike and were killed.

No names were released.

In may, an Ogden man died in a an early morning motorcycle crash on Saylorville Dam. James Slater, 19, was riding a cycle westbound on the Saylorville Dam roadway when he missed a curve and hit a guardrail.

It is not known if Thursday's crash happened at the same site as Slater's.

The Saylorville Dam is about 5 miles west of Ankeny.

What the hell is wrong with these people? Are they drunk or something? That is almost a mile long 25 MPH straight and you can see the turn way in advance. I feel bad for the passenger.... Those are fun curves but you need to be a little sane there.

I'm curious what will happen if it is found to be the same stretch of road where the Ogden man was killed. Will people claim the road/curve needs to be revamped? More signs? After so many accidents on a particular stretch, people will start to believe it's the road's design that is at fault.

I was just about to post this story, thanks Wraith.

FYI the police will probably be skulking that area for awhile now due to this second fatal crash. I too love to ride that area, however, I would advise for riders to avoid it for awhile until heat dies down.

Damn, not again. I don't understand how that happened. Does anyone know which direction he was going on the Dam. It appears that he crashed right by the Dam control tower. If he was coming from the east, I don't see why he crashed, if he was coming from the West, how fast would he have been going.

I love riding by Saylorville, but there are so many cops there as it is, I get nervous about speeding, since I am so young, I am kind of a cop magnet....

May he RIP

It was a Triumph Speed 4, bright green - they were doing over 100 mph, it happened in the same spot as the kid from ogden. I'm on Johnston FD, worked both of the accidents. As for being drunk, I have no idea - toxicology hasn't come back on the guy. This was the worst accident I have ever seen - won't erase those images for a while. heh- you can see my left arm in that first picture.

Ive driven by the site several times. He had to either have been (1) drunk, (2) inexperienced, (3) distracted (but how distracted can you be at those speeds), (4) didn't know the road and outdrove his headlight or (5) bike malfunction. The corner is very mild where he hit and most average riders could easily take it at triple digits speeds if they wanted even with a passenger. I have taken it at 80+ before and hardly leaned the bike. 99% of the time crossing that bridge I go no more than 35 b/c of all the people and police.

Ride within your limits guys and live longer. RIP to the accident victims.

The Full Story on the Ogden Kid

To fill you in that kid from ogden, was skipping rocks down by the lake off the middle of the damn and around 1:30am he left and was going west bound, so he wasn't just crusing. He hadn't even been traveling half a mile. He was a smart driver and knew what he was doing. From the research that i saw he hit the gard rail and his head impacted the wooden piller killing him instantly.. i hopefound him at 3:30am. They later He made one BIG MISTAKE NO HELMET. If you are wondering how i know this, ya he was 19 but he was no kid. He was my best friend and a fellow Marine. A week later we got activated and now my unit is one marine less for when we hit the sand of iraq. If we can learn anything it's one simple and basic fact.... WEAR YOUR STUPID HELMET. Believe me it hurts others more than is hurts yourself when you dont. Ride Safe.

Godspeed and Semper Fidelis,
US Marine 03
