I was told that you get paid very well for doing this in countries like china or japan, and they pay for your expenses and living quarters. Anyone have any information about this?

I know some kids a couple years back did study abroad in China and I believe they were paid $200 a week for it. You don't have to know Chinese or anything, because the kids have been learning English for years, but they don't have anyone to talk to in English. So, basically you sit around and talk to them about nothing and teach them some American slang.

I don't think you will get rich doing this or live like a king in Asia, but it definatly could be fun and a learning experience.

Oh God, I hope that isnt true,. We Americans have butcherd the english launguage. Almost ever other word that comes out of some ones mouth ages ranging from 10-25 yrs. is the word "like". We Americans dont "talk" english, we "speak" english.. (sort of)!

My brother took off a few years ago to Taiwan to teach english to kids. Its not easy to find a decent school to work for but he was lucky to find one. Pay depends on alot of factors, he makes ok money teaching in a school but makes better money tutoring kids at nite. The cost of living is high in the city so he tutors alot to keep ahead. His wife makes more than he does since she's from Tai Pei. He did it for the experience not for the money and he really enjoys it.

yeah, i'm considering it because i've always wanted to learn different languages. I figured if I was forced to learn it, I would grasp the language alot faster than if I were to do it on my own time.

I'd pay thousands for a whole day's worth of thread reading on this site that was even moderately coherent. And I always thought teachers were full of shit when they said "we're" all getting dumber each year.

Yeah, i was actually gonna go to China this summer to teach english at a private school. I was supposed to get paid a few hundred a week on top of all the other stuff they were providing, but since SARS came back for a little bit at the beginning of the summer, the government shut us down. In Japan, english is super cool and if you know it you're like automatically awesome. In China, its really really valuable since you have so many more opportunities if you can speak english, and its probably kind of cool too.

I've seen a comedy routine where all the people in India were Americans who moved there to follow their jobs. Might have been the same skit.

i know a few people that have done this so maybe i can shed some light. you'll have to surf the net to find the companies that support the teaching abroad programs, i don't know any off the top of my head, but anywho, if you're thinking about doing it in the EU (european union), forget it. it is almost impossible to get a work visa for the EU and two of my friends had to work under the table in spain for 8 months because they guy told them that he couldn't get them a work visa, but could pay them under the table. not that this is a bad thing, it's just illegal, and who wants to go to jail in a foreign country? i know i sure as fuck don't! another guy i know went to estonia and he said that he had the time of his life. the pay isn't all that much, but you normally get hooked up with a family to live with and they're the ones that feed you. the money you make is mainly just spending money. i've been to russia (not to teach, just travel) and that would be a great place to go. that and any of the other eastern european/former soviet bloc countries. the women are good looking, the booze (and everything else) is cheap, and if you went to teach english, you would basically be getting paid to do nothing! i've thought about doing it, but i'm making decent money and don't want to leave my job. however, if you're a recent college grad with nothing to do, it's the perfect job! just make sure you research who you're going to work for (the company because like i said, there are a few of them out there) and maybe try to find some people that have done it before and get their side of the story.

Word of advice if you go to a major city in Asia to teach. If you are a male behave yourself because the nightlife is totally different than a city here in the States. Places dont close till very late and there are always people WOMEN everywhere.

When I was back home in Canton my eyes were like "Damm its 10pm weeknight and there are people everywhere".

You might not believe me since most people think China is like Afganistan still. And try to stay away from those " Massage Parlors". I loved going to them and getting a massage, foot massage 2hrs total for about 15 bucks US dollars.Of course you could tip and get a little more than that : ).
