I spoke up a few weeks ago about a 2nd gear problem on a 1993 Katana. Everyone was saying I might tear in and get lucky and have like a bent shift fork/mechinism but chances are its a set of gears and worn dog teeth. (jumping out of 2nd gear) How hard of a job would it be to tear into and redo?

I'm going to school for auto mechanics and auto trans and manual trans classes were a breeze. I've never torn into a bikes tranny 'cept clutches in my YZ125.

Also can someone ballpark me a dollar figure I'm looking at for parts? Will I have to tear down the top end and at that point would it be smarter to do rings and top end gaskets or can I split just the trans? I havent seen the bike. It's a buddies who is in Iraq and I was going to buy it for a project for me and my brother to take over riding after I'm done.

It's a 1993 Katana in good shape cept the trans problem and a cracked lower fairing which I'd need to replace and paint

I wold be willing to bet you need to split the case to change out any gears in engine. I also believe It’s a pretty difficult job if you have never done it before.

I think splitting the case means virtually total disassembly of engine and transmission, which is all within the same case. What do shops charge these days? 60 an hour? Bet it’s at least an 8 hour job + parts. O yea that’s going to hurt,

Surprised you haven't had an issue on your 97 YZF, that is the big rant amoung YZF owners. Check the YZF600R Forums for info on that bike, been talked about a hundred times heh.

I've never had a problem and at this point I drive that thing like an R6. I really need to get a different bike or I will start having problems with that YZF.

Do you guys think a shop will touch it if I tear the motor out, tear it apart to the point of needing the cases split, and then give it to them just to do the tranny work?

The job itself is actually not that difficult. It is just time consuming. Basically all you have to do is remove the engine from the frame, turn it upside down on a bench, and pull the lower case half off. You can leave the entire top end assembled.

From there the transmission will be exposed. The parts will only cost around $200 or so. It's the 10 hours + of labor that's the killer.
