What is the size of the wrench needed for the front axle. It uses a huge allen wrench.

Whatever size it is, you won't be able to find an actual allen for it (unless it's 12mm).
You probably need something like this: Motorcycle Axle Hex Tool

Just measure the thing with a ruler or caliper gauge to make sure.

Excellent suggestion! I use this tool and it's well constructed!

In a pinch take a large nut that properly fits inside the hole and turn it with a wrench

I'm still baffled as to why they've gone to this system instead of just having a hex head like on the old bikes.
Save weight?
Force everyone to buy a tool and hence be more likely to get dealer service instead?

13/16 spark plug socket turned around backwards with an extension in through the opposite way like you're polish, hehe

Most of it is weight savings as most of these designs are Hollow axles.
