Good day everyone. I'm thinking about scooping up a good used SUV or pickup truck to move stuff around, have more space, and try the "truck" experience. I've got a 91 Accord that I've done a lot of work too which will end up being my city/errand car. My budget is around $5k - $6k and my ideas so far are:

Nissan Pathfinder
Toyota 4Runner
Chevy Tahoe
Jeep Cherokee (little iffy on Chrysler products though)
Ford Explorer

Any help, suggestions, tips, and what to look for would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty good at working on cars, so I don't mind turning wrenches on my own vehicles.

Thanks!

Looking for something a bit larger than the Escape
Look into Silverados, some smoking deals man! Can get a 2007 new body style for 15k.

The new Silverados are pretty cool, I think they are a lil over dependent on electrical though.
I am a Toyota man, my Land Cruiser although a 95 has 240k miles and only needs basic services and everything still works on it.

i have a 98 jeep grand cherokee with 140k on it and no problems and a buddy of mine had a 96 with over 275k on it when he sold it, it was still kicking with no major problems. the i6 is a great engine. i usually get around 17 in town and about 24 on the highway as far as miles per gallon go.

If i were to buy a second vehicle it would be a silverado/sierra hands down

Explorer is a four-letter word at my house. Bought a new one in 2000, and I don't even feel like sitting here typing out all the problems I had with the thing. It was absolutely insane.

I wouldn't wish an Explorer on anybody.

Silverado/Sierra or Tundra.

I like the 2nd gen Rams (2002-2008?), but some people don't seem to care for them. I know they get worse MPG then the Chevy/GMC.

Also love the Avalanche and if you like bling, the Escalade EXT version! :D

I think that first off, a truck is a tool. you have to figure out what job you want it to do, then select the proper tool.
an SUV is really a 4wd station wagon. If what you need to haul will fit in it, then it may be the way to go. They come in all sizes and many can tow a decent trailer that can hold bikes. But so can a big sedan.
A truck can hold bikes ( and all kinds of other stuff) without a trailer, but the bed is higher than a trailer, can be REAL high, depending on the truck. They also come in all sizes and can tow trailers.
A van (full size- Econoline etc...) can do pretty much what a truck can do but the cargo is inside locked and out of the weather. Long vans can have a row or two of seats and still have room for bikes in the back. Or a place to set up an air mattress for to sleep overnight. And vans can pull trailers. Some bikes need to have their windshields removed to get in the door though, most dont but loading a bike into a van can be a little trickier than a truck or trailer (you can't stand up)

Most folks can get by just fine with a small 4cyl, 2wd pick-up truck. (long bed if you can find one) Simple and cheap and fine for most non-commercial uses. ( also slow and bad in the snow without good snow tires and a rubbermaid tub full of sand in the back) 4wd helps here.

Happy hunting
