Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies grabbed the holeshot at the green light and pulled an immediate advantage over the pursuing Graves Yamaha runners, Aaron Gobert and pole man DiSalvo.
Spies had close to a second advantage following lap 2, but his opportunity to escape would soon disappear with the rapid DiSalvo moving into second, going around the outside of his teammate entering the hard-braking Turn 6 during the next lap. He then quickly started reeling the Texan in, while the Aussie title hopeful was fading in the other direction.
DiSalvo methodically worked Spies into his sights before finally making his move in a tight inside maneuver in 6 on lap 7. The New Yorker then started to build up a small advantage of his own, but slowed the pace a bit to give his tires a rest.
As a result, Spies closed right up on the rear of DiSalvo’s R1, just as the two found themselves being rapidly hunted down by a charging Roger Hayden.
