If usually start by looking at old paper maps. I find it difficult to get a sense of scale with online maps.

I then go to MotorcycleRoads.US - Your one-stop resource for great motorcycle roads in the US and check out the input from riders who have been there before me.

Once I have a good idea of where I want to be, and what the area has to offer, I look at Google maps and using the routing feature begin to detail out the route.

I usually build in shortcuts and side trips to legnthen /shorten the trip based on my mood and schedule.

The loops I ride I know like the back of my hand, but Ill explore other roads and get lost...thats the best thing about a motorcycle, getting lost is actually fun unlike a car.

MadMaps are the best maps around. If you dont have them, buy a bundle.

I life in a state where traveling to neighboring states in a matter of mere hours. I have maps of Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and the like in my sack. Of course, I'll typically find myself in a situation where the maps are proving less than helpful, so I keep a GPS in my bag as well (all helpful if I'm in need of fuel, sleep, food, etc). My typical trip begins with fingering a location on google maps, and riding there in a round about fashion. I'll often times do a triangle of sorts, with a destination at one extremity, one at another and then home. How I get to those desired locations is a function of which direction I turn the handlebars.
