Im going to try to do alot more in depth tutorials as the days go by. Please feel free to put up requests or suggestions in this area. Im going to keep all tutorials free from comments or questions as it clutters up the tutorial

Thanks everyone and I look forward to hearing from each and every member here!

Noted.............but its a bit out of the scope for the average guy. You have to pull the cams out on most bikes these days so I get a bit leary about writing up a tutorial like that.

Ill see what happens with the stuff I do now.

If I may make just one recommendation: keep the comments out until the tutorial is finished, but discussion around the tutorial and questions seem to have cleared up issues with the documentation.

For example, the questions I got around the garage door opener how to...

My How To wish is "fabricate my own forks" :)

That was noted awhile ago..........I try to make sure the tutorials are devoid of useless commentary. They can start a thread of questions if they want.........but I dont want it crowding the tutorials. Thats like writing notes in a library book.

Sure thing...........get yourself some PVC pipe in two sizes (slip fit) and some springs.............should be pretty simple from there.

problem with some tutorials is that the older bikes like what i have, may be slightly different from the newer ones.......

i may be doing stainless brake kit soon, if I do, ill take pics and post the tutorial

A tutorial on suspension set-up.

I know what pre-load, static sag, rebound damping, compression damping are, but a tutorial that gives a kind of...I'll try an example...

If I turn into a corner, and encounter some bumps, and the rear is slipping and
wobbling, (like when a car has poor struts) what do I need to adjust and what
will I compromise elsewhere by taking care of this problem?

Something like that.

For a 190 lb. (5 '11) rider on a 1994 CBR 600 F-2, that has fairly new fluids and springs

I found that:

Front suspension spring pre-load should be about 2 1/2 turns out from soft

...about 2-3 bands showing.


Front rebound damping should be about 9 out from soft...soft being until it seats

counterclockwise to full soft. In other words...a bit stiff...but not bouncy,

and not so stiff that the tire is forced hard back to the top of the stroke should

you hit a bump.


Rear Suspension:

Rear spring preload is about at the 6 mark...

This can cause the tire to skid a bit coming down off of sharp bumps...

but also makes the bike good at flicking (changing directions) quickly.


Rear compression damping should be 80% towards hard.


Tire pressure is at 35 rear...32 front...Avon Viper Sports.


These settings are for pretty smooth roads...good grip...


Potholes though should be avoided or if no other choice...

braked over...smoothly...softly...

How about a, how to install a brembo master cylinder, and replace the brake fluid.

Do you need a bleeder tool for the install? Or can it be done without it?

I think the section would be a great addition to the board, if it could be tailored in such a way to reach the greatest number of users and skill levels.

Just a quick look at the normal topics in the General or Open sections should get you going. Sometimes I wonder if anyone can change a light bulb by themselves without asking for help or crowing over the fact they did it.

insert name here dropping in a new engine is post worthy, insert name here putting on a set of bar ends isn't.​

The problems as I see it are:

A) The range of experience, or lack thereof, that we have on this board. Some guys need information on the simplest tasks such as oil changes, and others are ready to do a full bore and polish job. Personally, I fall in the middle.

B) Tools needed for the job, and the tools available to the 'joe shade tree wrench' and someone in your position are two different animals. You no doubt can put your hand on a spring compressor to do a fork job, others can't.

C) How many different manufacturers, models, and years are represented on this board?

D) Street, bling, track, faster, safer, braking, fairings, painting, etc. Everyone needs a different answer depending on their joy in the sport.

E) A big concern would be safety. It's not a big deal to bleed the brake lines, anybody can do it, and anyone can do it wrong. I can guarantee that at least one person on this board will try, fail, and F-up when he grabs a hand full and comes up empty. Few things on our rides, and their maintenance don't relate to safety.

Will you accept submission of Tutes, or will it be a Hybrid Shop thing?





Oh yeah, get the F back to work.

That's a pretty impressive challenge to put up tutorials relevant the hundreds of makes/models out there...but what I've read so far is great work.

It seems like there's two extremes of riders on this board...guys with a lot of wrench time and guys with very little. But the guys with very little won't get better without getting the feet wet first. Have you thought about a "basic maintenance guide" (possibly even in the New Riders section) just to help people get started. You've already got a great one on chain maintenance and I saw mention of and oil change, both basic and essential tasks. I could see adding things like removing wheels, changing brake fluid, changing brake pads, changing coolant, and lubing cables as being part of basic guide.

Beyond that, maybe get into some of the basic mods most commonly done...exhaust, flush mounts (I know they're easy), etc. You'd have to keep the how-to's generic, but it would at least provide something to compare against and a checklist of things that need to be done.

I'm sure I'll think of some more when I'm working on my bike next weekend...

I fall in the middle, like gng. The good thing in that case is, whatever I put up is relevant to his bike ;)

I'd be willing to help maintain an html-based site to put these tutorials on in a much better format than the post-by-post... but I don't have the bandwidth available to host it myself. Do we have this ability on SBN? Should I or hybrid ping Fred?

I'm doing an oil change this weekend - I'll do the step-by-step. Of course, the tools and part numbers I'll use only really apply to Ducati...

In all reality, though, if you can't figure it out after seeing the basics of someone else doing it with pictures... you probably shouldn't do it.

Maybe we should set "levels" for different how to articles?

this may seem like a dumb question, but i need an answer.

is it possible to get a how to on reading your tire wear? or how to on when it's time to replace your tires?

A good write up on an exhaust mod. A good picture filled write up on how to install new full system. And also installing a slip on or bolt on with pics. Alot of newbs dont know the diff between slip or bolt on and a good how to with pics would be helpful to some.
