Considering any bike is dangerous and certainly even standards and cruisers can get you killed, I don't subscribe to the big bike+new rider= instant death either. I've suggested against any sport bike as a beginner ride.
Even so, it's obvious that liter bikes are alot of bike to come to grips with. I won't suggest that'll it's a one way ticket to death, but I'll concede that it's a poor choice at best.
Besides, I get to use cute pix like this one:

Both that thread and the recent European (MAIDS) study contradict the notion that it's the bike.

:lol I'm so predictable.

But seriously, I think we do an incredible disservice to new riders on big bikes by convincing them they are death traps. More disserving though, is if we give new riders on small bikes a dangerous sense of security.

Thanks guys for your input, majority of you have great ideas! Just to fill those who don't know in...this really isn't about starting small etc like Malik said---this is just about this particular guy on this bike with 3 months riding experience and somewhat of no fear attitude. He had a nice Kat 600 that I thought would be good for him to learn on for around a year but once he got a glimpse of the R6 (not the "twins" LOL) he wanted that bike or something like it..and so now he has the 954.

I like the idea of going out with him, just him and me, because the last time we all rode together, there were tons of squids doing some really great standup wheelies across the bridge (have to give them that!)..lots of testosterone that night!! It was like running with a wild pack of wolves...

Thanks for the advice guys...I just can't not care for someone who is a friend...it's not in my blood!! :)

Note...the "twins" are on their own website now just for the record <wink>

I've read your other thread about this guy Rsixxy. To me it's obvious no matter how hard you try to teach this guy anything, he's just too ignorant to listen. My advice to you is, while this guy is riding, stay as far away from him as you can.

to bad, most countries agree w/ the start small agenda..........or you ideas might have some merit.......:twofinger

so what you are saying is that if you target fixate on a ninja 250 and on an r6 at the same speed you are lesslikely to get hurt on the 250?

Blame the riders not the bikes. show me stats that say a crash on a smaller bike at the same speed as one on a b***** bike is less likely to kill you?

any bike that will go over 30 mph or even slower can kill you. I personally think that if more people rode 500ninjas and 250s we would see a drastic increase in people killed on these bikes. But of course this is my opinion.

I disagree here. I think you should ride with him and give him help. show him the right way to ride. Dont just abandon him because he goat a b***** bike than you would want him to. He needs good riders to help him learn the way. If people set an example for him he will want to follow and he will become a better rider in the process

You must not have read rsixxy's previous threads. She has offered this guy good advice in the past, only to have him shrug it off. Keep in mind here, this is no teenage punk who knows everything, it's a man in his late 30's who Rsixxy has said got into motorcycles for picking up chicks.

There is only so much you can say to a person. Some people just don't want to listen to someone trying to convince them to not get something they want despite the wisdom behind it. It's sad, but some people won't learn until they hurt themselves. I think you did more than enough to disuade the guy. Sorry he is so blind to your wisdom.

nobody has any hard stats, the euros did a recent study, but it's not very representative of the US, cuz of there overwheleming use of small bikes vs our very little use of them.

but simply ask your ins. agent........he'll tell you, monitarily.......

I would try to point him in the right direction (msf course) and see if he would take some advice before I would have him riding around with me.

Anyone who gets into the sport for picking up chicks is an ass-hat of the highest capacity.

+1. His reason for getting a bike is already questionable. Although he probably won’t be partaking in squidly activities (aside from the posing aspect) do you want to go down or possibly die if loses control?

(My intention is not to thread jack, but read this http://www.sportbikes.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7744)

i did ask my insurance agent. She told me that they go by cc's of the bike. meaning an sv is just as expensive as a r6. or a ex500 isnt much cheaper than an r6. a katana 600 is no cheaper than a gixxer 600. of cours all insurance companies are different but most go by the age of the person and their driving recore. which makes you think. Is it the immature rider that is expensive to insure or the bike? i just think that it is the person not the bike. I have an 04 R1 and only pay 300 a year for full coverage.

so you have state farm, they haven't figured it out yet. had them before. every other ins. co. uses bike designation SS vs cruiser.......and trust me SS bikes are alot higher per cc.......

is that full coverage or lia only?
