My brother and I are planning a trip out to Cooke City MT this summer, and just wondering about rejetting. I have looked in the shop manual and it says "if riding over 6000 the majority of the time" to switch over to "high altitude" jets. The problem i have with that is most of our riding will be from 4000ft to 8000ft with some as low as 3000ft and some as high as 10000ft. Just wondering if anyone out there has experience in riding up the mountains with just stock jets in. I'm not looking for super performance up the mountain, it has frieken hairpins on it anyway, i just want to be able to ride without spitting and sputtering the whole trip, or the worse case, rejet, and then have it run like crap in the lower elevations. Thanks for the help.

If you're not planning on spending any length of time above 6000 ft, don't worry about it. The only issue will be a gradual loss of power as you climb as it will be a little rich. If you were moving to a high elevation, that would be another story.

That is what i figured, we will only be above 6000ft for like 40 or 50 miles. I figured it will still run fine, just not as well. I just get paranoid cuz we ride snomobiles out there as well, and i remember changing jets on the side of the trail cuz they were running like ass. But i suppose they are two strokes and jetting seems to be more important for them than for 4 strokes, or at least that is how i see it.

If you were moving, you wouldn't rejet. You'd adjust your mixture settings. As it is, you'll be fine. Beautiful riding country, but still pretty chilly, even in the summer. Pack at least one long sleeve shirt to wear as an extra layer.

I moved from Florida to Denver. My GSX-R 750 would barely run there. I took it up in the mountains to maybe 8000 ft. elev. and it wouldn't even idle. There is a huge difference up there. My ZX-10R, which will motor up a wheelie in 4th in Florida, wouldn't come up in second in Denver at 5240 elev. Sure felt great when I came back down to Florida. :banana
