If this were to happen in my home state, I would buy a horse.

We already do have this, it's called tax on gasoline!
Except the gas tax doesn't involve installing a GPS in your car which of course the government will never use for purposes other than distance traveled. :twofinger

Haha just read the article, pretty retarded. Theres no way in hell that's gonna happen in the US and if it does I suggest a violent overthrow of the government.*

My stupid fucking country will probably be the guinea pig... even though everything is sooooooooo far apart.

Like, I consider driving to toronto and back to visit my bro on the weekend (around 650 mile round trip not including driving in the city) to be a "small" excursion. Montreal (200 mile round trip roughly) is a joke.

You would overthrow the government for this little thing? WTF? After all that's happen, now it's like "Shit, now they are taxing us per-mile. We must take over. Who cares that they took away our rights, destroyed the constituion, search private homes without warrents and everything else. But now, taxing us per-mile! MY GOD!"

It said instead of the "personal property tax". I would take that anyday. Why the fuck should I have to pay to own soemthing and hardly ever use it. I have 3 cars and 2 bikes have to pay personal proerty on all 5 but I dont always use all 3. Do you see what im getting at. I feel there would be significant savings to me.

That would be short-sighted. You would be selling your autonomy for a few bucks. (Assuming that it would save you money in the first place, since you can bet the new setup won't collect less money than the old one overall.) If you object to paying taxes simply for owning things (which is a perfectly reasonable objection), then fight against them doing that.

I wouldn't bet on Cali being first. Oregon was making serious proposals about it.
Man, my home state has really taken a turn. Its always been tolerant (in a "you do your thing and leave me the fuck alone" way) but never ultra-liberal/big government.

Too bad there's no way to shield the GPS antenna and prevent it from receiving.

Oh, wait...

I'm sure this new law will only open up the market to new illegal software/hardware products that will help drivers block the GPS but this doesn't change the fact that the law is damn retarded.

Oh and also, does that mean that all bikes will come with a GPS in 2012?

It surprised me as well. But then again, Oregon won't even let you pump your own gas.

I don't like this proposal at all on privacy grounds, but I'm on the fence about whether the basic idea is fairer than gas tax. Gas tax would ideally be good enough because heavier vehicles get poorer mileage and so pay more tax per mile. But as mileage improves for SUVs but not so much for cars, the gap gets closer. Then there's the sportbike that causes almost no damage at all, but gets similar mileage to a Corolla.
I'm thinking that gas tax is still a good enough approximation, especially once you add in the cost of the GPS units and their maintenance.
