So my buddy went to register himself and me for an MSF class. Before they took his apps they suggested that we should take a private lesson before taking the course, as it'll help us pass. Honestly, is this $70 lesson worth taking, or are they trying to milk as much money out of us as possible?

If you sign up for the basic rider course, you'll be fine. No other classes are necessary. A 55 year old woman that had never been on a motorcycle or anything before was in my class and passed. Relax.

Put the money towards gear not a private lesson. The idea behind the BRC is to teach you how to ride.

I figured. And if this place tries to pull a fast one on us, by lets say sabotage, they'll be hearing from the masses at SBN! (Right?)
Ummmm- sure? Because we have magic powers or something?

They're trying to soak you for another $70. I'd never been on a motorcycle before my BRC, and I passed with no problems. Several of my classmates had never been on a bike before, either, and they passed.

I see two possibilities: 1) they're trying to soak you for $70, or 2) they do such a poor job teaching the BRC that many newbies don't pass unless they've had the private lesson.

Either way, I'd avoid these bozos. Do you have an alternative place to take the BRC?

I did, until they got their MSF licence taken away or something along those lines. These guys are about an hour and a half away. The nearest ones after that is a close to 3 hour drive. No way i can even think of making the those. Speaking of my other MSF class, i e-mailed the guy twice and called several times, trying to get a refund to which he hasnt responded yet for 3 days. Whats the normal grace period before i go to a lawyer?

He said something he shouldnt have...after that it all went downhill. Go read the 80 page thread in the general sportbike forum.
Jeez, its at 80 now? That is truly the never-ending thread.

That really sux Rutra, I have to drive a hour and a half for my course since the city won't let anyone teach the course yet. And the only guy in town who taught it is trying to give private lessons for $600. I thought I had it bad.

Does anyone have an answer to the question i had up in my last post? "Speaking of my other MSF class, i e-mailed the guy twice and called several times, trying to get a refund to which he hasnt responded yet for 3 days. Whats the normal grace period before i go to a lawyer?" The guy still hasnt responded to my emails.

Thats retarded. Thats basically what the MSF itself is. They teach people that cant ride a bicycle or drive a manual how to ride a motorcycle by the end of the day.

They want your money.

You don't need lessons. Passed it with zero points easily. Could do figure-8 in half of the box size. You'll be fine.

Same. Kinda scary that all the to-be cruiser guys in my class passed with 15-20 points off though.

Just an update:

Took the last day of my MSF class today, and im a graduate.

I went out of the box during the figure 8, and i supposedly looked down during the high speed turn...which im not exactly sure that i did. Other than that i had no points taken off for anything else.

I had a lot of fun, but need more work without a doubt. When i get a bike i'll be putting quite a few of my first miles on it at a parking lot.

Thanks to everyone for your help!
