Officer737 offered-up his expertise to the general forum a while back. I'd like to extend the same curtesy to the FZ6 forum. I'm an Officer in CA. Does anyone have any questions for the Po-Po they've always wanted answered, but never had an opportunity to ask?

I may not know all the specifics of your state, but laws are fairly consistent (the death penalty and "Lane Sharing" aside). And I can help explain questionable tactics or behavior...

There's one question I've been meaning to ask.

Is it against the law to warn other commuters that there's a po-po ahead, and what do you feel personally as a cop about it?

It technically is against the law. They put it under "interferring with a law enforcement officer and his lawful duties". Personally....if I am running radar and someone starts flashing their lights that is fine with me as long as people slow down :D

Thanks, but I can always submit an argument that, how is making people aware of police presence to the innocent public be interferring with law enforcement. Unless they're already convicted criminals, I can understand. Wouldn't it be like if I flashed everyone I think is speeding to make them slow down, technically is helping you do your job without issuing a ticket?:)

I am a police officer in Massachusetts and flashing lights to warn other motorists is not against the law. As far as wheelies go, you could be issued a criminal citation for reckless operation which may result in loss of license and a hefty fine. Wheelies on the roadway are obviously dangerous for the operator as well as other motorists, thus the reason for the criminal charge.

Would you honestly ever give another cop (off-duty in private vehicle) a speeding ticket (going 5-25 MPH) over the speed limit as you would give naturally to anyone else? How about if you pulled a car over that was going an excessive speed; over 100 MPH and with no reasonable excuse would you ever do anything to this off-duty officer? What id he had a drink but you knew he could drive but it was still over the legal limit and you pulled this officer over? How would you handle these situations from the minor to the more serious? Thanks

OK here's one. As I rode 495 last week, about 11 AM on a weekday, I had to go at least 85mph in the left lane or I was getting routinely passed. This was only slightly less true in the "slow" lane. And I do have a speedohealer installed.

My question is this: is the routine violation of posted limits a contradiction that bugs you or anyone else? It seems weird to me, that traffic "always" goes 20 mph over the limit in a lot of places. I never felt unsafe myself, but it seems like the autobahn out there almost every time I ride.

Maybe a better question is, from your observations are drivers pushing the limit any more than they were say 10 years ago?

#1) Someone once told me that you cannot be arrested for a moving violation. Is this true?

#2) How much wood would a wood chuck chunk if a wood chuck could chunk wood?

I dont know about TX but i believe in florida they can arrest you on the spot for going X amount over the speed limit. It might be something like double the speed limit or more than 30 mph over the posted. Just something i heard but havent really looked to verify.

i suppose part 2 all depends on the size of the wood chuck in question.

Thanks for putting yourselves at risk of the peanut gallery. :)

My questions are:

1) are motorcycles harder to target with RADAR (car mounted or otherwise) than other vehicles?

2) Is it true that staying in the furthest right-hand lane possible may give a speeder a little bit of an edge/reaction time against being hit with RADAR?

3) I have heard that the two most scary/dangerous situations for most officers are "routine" traffic stops and domestic violence calls. I'm pretty solid on my "what to do if pulled over in my car" routine. Is there anything cyclists could do to make a traffic stop less nerve-wracking for an officer?

Thanks :)

I once got caught doing a very nice wheelie through a traffic intersection on a 500cc Gamma (2 stroke race rocket) with the japanese rising sun paint job on it. I was a 22 year old female with long red hair wearing full race leathers. A cop saw me, pulled me over, and I played the old "OMG officer I don't know what happened. I gave it gas and the front wheel came up". He told me to calm down (after being surprised I was female of course) and let me off with a warning.

My question...was he just being nice or do you think he really believed my bullsh*t? And do you guys generally give females a break.

And is it true, that if motorists are friendly and nice when you pull them over, that you will cut them breaks?

If you flash your bright lights you could receive a citation for failure to dim to oncoming traffic. If your gesture is some other fashion then there are not any laws in Louisiana that specifically prohibit this activity. It is going to be state specific. If the state covers this activity by statute you can argue as much as you like but the statue would cover the enforcement.

Turning the bike off should be a def. first... that way you show you aren't going to run...

Whenever I have been pulled over (on my bike) here in CA, the officer always tells me to kill the ignition and toss the keys on the sidewalk, ground next to me, etc... and to keep my hands where he/she can see them. Once they are over to me, I can dismount, gear down if needed... and I always tell them that my insurance/reg. is under the seat and open and remove it very slowly... Here they seem to take the extra precaution to make it a safe encounter, so I try to do the same by being friendly, honest, and not making any sudden movements...

1. Derogatory question. This is a prejudice statement. It's intent is derogatory. We can act like it is in jest but is it really? It is a stereotype just like any other. Would you ask a black guy if he liked to eat (insert stereotype)? If I had my choice though it would be Krispy Kreme. :) How about you?

2. Of course. They are humans subject to the same frailties as the rest of the population. Sometimes a law is broken but legally justified by some other law.

3. There are only stories and conjecture. No one has a solid answer. Most often it is attributed to the 60's during the DNC protests in Chicago. Why do you call them pigs?

4. Of course. They are just like the rest of the population. Most people here have probably wanted to beat someone up. As long as it is a thought and not an action. People get angry. Cops are people. :bitchslap

5. Stereotype. Why do all sportbike riders ride wheelies, speed, etc., etc., etc. The problem that most people have , myself included, is being told what to do by another person who is not my parent or supervisor. Having your rights suspended by a government agent sucks.
