Quick question for those of you that have sold your FZ's... Do you regret it?

I bought another bike this summer... A 2008 Suzuki DRZ400SM (supermoto). It's about as much fun as you can possibly have with your clothes still on. Honestly, I've only riddden my FZ two or three times since I got the DRZ, and that was mainly because I was guilty that I wasn't riding it.

I really do love my FZ. I have it set up exactly the way I want it (Top Saddlery seat, Scorpion exhaust, Michelin Pilot Road 2 tires, FAZR6 FE kit, Stebel Nautilus horn, Killernoodle clutch lever, LSL frame sliders). It's just that all I want to ride now is the supermoto... It's SO much fun... It's like having the little guy on your shoulder always telling you to do bad things... LOL... (of course I always ride safely)

Both bikes are paid for, so I don't need to make a "rash" decision. Just curious if any of you have sold your FZ's in a similar situation, and if so, did you reget it?

Thanks for your input...

I sold my FZ6 and was sad to see it go. I had plenty of great miles and I couldn't have asked for a more reliable bike. I only sold it because I replaced it with the exact bike I wanted, a black FZ1. No regrets.

MTN, I've still got my FZ (and will for a long time), but I thought I'd add this.

A riding friend of mine bought a DRZ400SM last year and is totally in love with that thing. He's just like you...raving about how much fun it is. I completely believe him.

His other bike is a Kaw ZRX 1200R. BEAUTIFUL bike!

Anyway, I don't know what kind of riding you do, but when he brings the DRZ on an all-day group ride, 30 minutes in he's wallowing around in the seat because his ass hurts so bad. He even sent it off to that "Great Day To Ride" seat guy in Florida last winter and it didn't help much.

My point is this...if you do or plan to do any long-range riding, you might want to keep the FZ for that purpose. It's going to be a lot more comfortable.

On a side note: I've gotta get my courage up and take him up on the offer to try the DRZ sometime! It does look like a blast and he's grinning ear to ear when we make a stop...lol.

Thanks for your input. I usually do about one "all day" ride per year (400+ miles). But is it worth keeping the FZ for one ride a year? The DRZ seat definitely isn't comfortable for long rides, but the nice thing about that bike is that you can stand up comfortably while riding and take the pressure off the butt.

As far as my riding goes... I mostly just commute to work (not far), and do shorter (~50 mile) rides on the weekends. All of those (except the once a year long ride) the DRZ does just fine.

And a response to your side note... Don't ride your friend's DRZ-SM unless you're ready to buy one... :banana

Thanks,
-Mike

Owned an '05 FZ6 and sold it early '07 and picked up a '07 Hyosung GT650. Just a couple of weeks ago, I picked up an '09 FZ6.

While there were some issues with the early year FZ's (funky FI map that resulted in an "on or off" throttle feel, awful looking swingarm and just ok brakes) I loved the power, look and feeling I had on the bike.

The type of riding I did also changed and the GT650 was better suited for that.

But, in the end, I missed the free wheeling top end and overall feel of the FZ. The refreshed plastics, improved swingarm and brakes all made it a no-brainer to come back too.

Now I have my Hyo for in town riding around, the FZ for long rides and attacking the twisties and my Star 950 for relaxed riding with the wife.

I still have my FZ, but I also know there's NO WAY I'd sell it if I purchased a DS or SM. I'm a born & bred dirtbiker, and LOVE DS & SM, but there's nothing like the power of hte FZ, esp. on a longer ride. I tried doing my commute on a DS for a while, and it got old pretty quick (45 min. one way), esp. when the temps started to drop.

But, that said, if all your rides are as you say, you're paying a lot of money to keep tags & ins. on a bike to ride once a year...

Sold mine and I kinda miss it. I haven't ridden since then, so perhaps that is why I don't. I still really have the urge to go fast though. I was watching my friend's dad do a Ford spec racer race and I got that urge to want to go fast again, I just wish I had the money to do it, but it is way out of my league.

Thanks for your feedback guys... Deep down I feel like I will end up keeping the FZ, but we'll see. Either way I won't make a decision until next spring since now is not a very good time to sell a motorcycle in NH. I just wanted to hear from some of you that may have gone through something similar.

My dad kept his motorcycle license even though he sold his bike years ago. If I can get him out on the occasional ride with me then it will be more than worth it for me to keep both bikes.

Money really isn't an issue. Like I said it's paid for, and the insurance and registration is cheap enough.

Again, thanks for your input.

Hey, Mike, you're welcome for the input! And I think you're totally right on not taking my friend up on the "test ride" unless I'm ready to buy one. Everyone I know that's done it has gone out and bought a SM soon thereafter!

Thanks for the warning! :cheers

I traded my first FZ6 in on a Kawasaki ZX-14 when they first came out. I never enjoyed the ZX as much as the FZ, so I regretted getting rid of it that time. A couple of bikes later, I got another FZ6. I recently sold that to fund my other addition... classic Volkswagens. I haven't regretted it yet, but if I go too long before getting another bike, and if I can't afford to buy what I really want when the time comes, I may wind up regretting it.

There's a lot of great bikes out there, and the FZ6 is just one among many. I like a wide variety of bikes and it would be difficult for me to be completely satisfied with just one (and I can only afford to own one at a time). So, the FZ was a bike that could keep me satisfied for a time, but not forever.

I sold my '04 FZ6 about a month after I picked up a mint '05 FZ1 and haven't looked back. I did all the mods I could to the 6, but it never seemed like "my" bike. The cheap suspension and lack of torque did it in for me. I love my FZ1 for sport touring, but I wish it was lighter for when I really get into the twisties. Can't afford a second bike tho so the 1 will suffice for a while.
