I know there are some EMS people on here and I was hoping to get some suggestions.

I am an EMT-B in California and am looking at going to medic school. The problem I am facing is that I cannot get an Ambulance drivers license because of a medical problem. I am lucky to have found a BLS ambulance company that is willing to accommodate me but I spoke with someone from AMR and she said there is no chance of me being a medic for them or really anyone in cali. I am very interested in working for a FD but I am way more interested in the medic aspect than the fighting fires and cutting people out of cars part.

So my question is what are some options for me? I am not really interested in working at a hospital, if I were to do that I would go for RN or PA. I am willing to relocate if it is necessary but I don’t want to get a medic job and then the state screws me down the line because of my medical issue. I do have a valid car and motorcycles license and have no restrictions or anything like that. My medical problem is completely under control with medication and even if it wasn’t it is only an issue when I sleep. There are no restrictions on anything I can do, played lacrosse in high school with no issues and obviously drive with no issues.

Thanks in advance

you would probably have to relocate out of state but check the laws first or the companies requirement for drivers

Our service is very strict about driving records; took them 2 months to clear me to drive due to just 1 ticket. We actually won't hire anyone with medical conditions that may hinder them in driving our units priority; including seizure disorders. I'd still go for your medic; I've got a few months left in mine then I may look for something other than EMS. As a medic there are many, many career paths you can take. Paramedics have the option to be in a position for primary care; such as in clinics, on oil rigs, ships, and in many industries. Another choice would be to be a flight medic but many services there require at LEAST 3 years as a medic on the streets of a fairly busy service. If you have any questions shoot me a PM and I'll ask my boss (who's also my partner.) Helps to be working with a CCEMT-P of 20 years when you're just a Basic. :) Lots to be learned.
