On the CBR1000 07 sight glass, the oil is supposed to be in the middle when the bike is sitting upright (off the kickstand). Does anyone know if it's when the bike is cold or when the bike is running>? I just changed my oil and thought I had it spot-on; but then took it for a spin and checked it again and it's was a bit high. So I drained a little; and then added a little cause I drained too much... ugghh. Now, when it's cranked and upright it in the middle... cold it's at the top of the sight glass when upright. As simple as it was to change, it is a real pain to get it just right. Using the Rapsol Oil at a premium cost per quart so i really don't want to have to keep messing with it.

Thanks -

I think it is start it and let it warm up. Shut it off and give it a bit of time to let the oil drain back in and then check it. If you check it too fast it will show low.

Yep, oil level should be checked with bike upright, warmed up, and with the engine off for about a minute. Nothing wrong with the oil level at the top mark of the sight glass when checked correctly.

The side-to-side angle of the bike will make a big difference in oil level. When re-filling the oil after a change, I put my bike on a rear stand on a flat surface. Add oil to the top line. Run the bike for a couple of minutes, shut it off and re-check the oil level. Usually requires a bit more to top it off during the second check.

Yep. lol @ people who play a game of getting on the ground 10x to make sure the level is just perfect. Dump in 3 quarts and go.
For some reason my bike always takes about at least a 1/4 quart more than suggested by the manual so I use the sight glass. It's not that hard.

I check my oil periodically to make sure its consistent in volume. I fill mine up to where it should be using the glass so i have something to compare it to.

To each his own I guess. I prefer checking over that along with the other essentials like chain slack, checking tires for pressure and nails, and clutch cable for fray or whatever other little things.

Per the owner's manual: Fill oil (3.3 quarts), start the engine and allow to idle for 3 -5 minutes. Stop engine and wait 2 - 3 minutes. With bike upright, check that oil is at upper level mark in inspection window.
+1 Except engine is supposed to be up to operating temp 180-195.
