When you guys start from a stop, how exactly do you manage the clutch and throtle. Do you set the throtle at a certian spot and then let out the clutch slowly as you accelerate? Or do you leave the clutch at a spot and increase the throtle and then let the clutch out once your up to speed? I rode a sportbike for the first time yesterday ('87 Honda CBR600F) and I do a little of both I think, I really wasnt paying attention to that. It's only when starting from a stop that I have the problem, going to 2nd and 3rd I have no problem. This is also the exact same problem I have when I drive a stick car.

Sorry for the Noobish question, and thanks for your answers.

give it a bit of throttle. hold the throttle. Not revving the piss out of it. Just like a 1/8" turn. Then, let the clutch out until you get her moving forward. Apply throttle, and let off clutch at the same time. That's how I've tought people to drive stick in a car. Seems to help people

take the MSF class. Don't hurt yourself

same here, I crack the throttle a bit and let out the clutch, once I feel the clutch grab I open the throttle and let out the clutch at the same time.

Just practice, I remember I had a hell of a time with it when I first started. After awhile it becomes muscle memmory and the more you think about it the more you will mess it up.

Think smooth..............

+1 for asking questions.
Not to seem too philosophical, but think of your riding as a process rather than an event. Like a dance.
The activities – acceleration/deceleration, shifting, starting, stopping, leaning, turning – are not events. But, a process. The mechanical acts of twisting the throttle and releasing the clutch work best if performed simultaneously.
You want to try for smooth.
My wife used to ride with me. Every time I started, or shifted, or stopped and her helmet clunked mine I counted that a failure on my part. No clunk = smooth.
Think smooth.

(If I had any talent I would make a smilie for smooth.)

Thanks for the replies...next time I ride the bike Ill try it out, I never was super rough on starts...I was just wondering what the best way was and so I could improve so I am more efficent and consistant. I think what I do wrong though is that I kept increasin throtle slowly even before the clutch would grab...So I just have to work on waiting for the clutch to grab before I start giving it more.

Thanks again for the answers.

How I do It is Let the clutch out just until It starts to Engage and then Ease on the Throttle letting the clutch out as I go... For Hills Its Basically the Same thing... Get in the Friction zone to where Its grabbing but not moving and slowly let out and gas from there... Hills are a bit nerving at first but arent too bad... Kinda like a car but I feel Bikes are Easier on hills..

Yeah, i was wanting to help... but then got to thinking about it.

I have no idea what i do.... my hands just kinda do their thing, and the bike starts moving.... there's some shifting that happens after that, i think.

I'm usually too busy thinking about traffic or getting laid, sorry....

yea like has been said...it becomes subconcious. When I first started riding I would rev it real high then open the clutch (it was an old dirtbike so no problems with the front end). After about a week of practice I pretty much had it smooth where I let on gas and let out clutch at the same time for smooth starts. Youll get it just takes practice
