So I was walking through Costco and saw banners all over exclaiming the greatness of their new method of tire inflation, they mentioned it was better for handing, and tire life. Ok you rocket scientists, can you give any actual explanations?

Air is 78% N2.
Air is 20% O2.
Air is 2% other trace chemicals, the majority of which are Ar and CO2.

Any advantage you'd gain by having pure N2 in your tires, you're getting 78% of already. I don't know N2 vs O2's heat:temperature graphs offhand, but I am fairly sure that the delta is negligible.

Uh, what?

PV=nRT?

Of course nitrogen expands with increasing temperature. Where did you get this idea?

Air is mostly nitrogen. The only benefit of filling your tires with pure nitrogen as opposed to air would be the lack of oxygen which does over time cause damage to most rubber products, however I think this is another case of companies trying to use science to bamboozle the masses. Because as you see above, people in general have poor knowledge of science and will believe anything they're told.

Supposedly, it eliminates moisture (humidity), and is therefore more predictable and consistent... If you're a pro racer, it *might* just matter a little bit.

Nitrogen is used in aircraft tires because it will not explode with the instant heat and preasure of a aircraft landing. I believe it is used by the GP teams.

I'll find out for sure today why we use it.. I was under the assumption it was because of expanding under heat..

10) Pure Nitrogen Inflation of Tires Increases Tire Life 25%

Situation

Pure nitrogen increases tire life 25%
Nitrogen remains in the wheel longer resulting in better fuel efficiency
It is less likely than compressed air to corrode rims and deteriorate tires
Normal compressed air contains 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen plus moisture
Membranes in nitrogen separators/compressors filter out oxygen and moisture, last 10-years
Nitrogen used in racing and aircraft tires because non-flammable

Significant Points

Nitrogen use in tires could save ~$100K in 50-truck fleet
Fleets and high performance car drivers may adopt technology but not general public
No fuel efficiency is gained using nitrogen if proper tire inflation is maintained anyway
Nitrogen separators/compressors cost $3-10K in variety of quality levels/longevity
Cost to fill tires w/ pure nitrogen $3-5 per tire

I found out why we use Nitrogen...

It dosent change pressure with altitude/OAT changes..

also because its clean and dry to prevent corrosion on the inside of the wheel.

So in general it is a good thing, I wonder why costco of all places is doing this for all of their tire instalations at least my local store.
