Ok, sorry for misleading you with the title lol. Now that I have your attention, I need help with finding a beginner bike. I'm taking the MSF course soon so my quest to find a bike has begun. Can you guys give me a list of beginner bikes that I should look at(IE. ex500, etc)? Also, can you guys give me tips that would be helpful for a newbie? Thanks for the help. :)

My favorite is the Kawasaki 250R. Really small bike, light, but it will rev to the the stratosphere and actually give you some go power if you want it. Plus, you can buy a used one for like 1500, add a few more drops to it, and sell it for 1500 again in 6 months.

I want an R1 also, but am smart enough (I think) to stay away for at least 2 years. I've ridden for one year now and bought another 600. I say go with what your gut tells you, I started on a 600 and didn't have any problems with the power, albeit, it was an RF600 that is 8 years old, but nonetheless a 600. I'm sure I woulda been just as happy with a 500 too. I have to agree with just about everybody about going higher than 600 on your first may be too much, but disagree with many saying that a 600 is also way too much.

look into a dual-sport. learn the bike in the dirt so when you drop it, there really isn't any damage. once you are comfortable on it, and you have the urge to trick it out, you can turn it into a super-motard. with that set-up, you might get crushed in the straights but you'll make up for it in the corners. plus you can hit jumps with it, just in case your hooligan side prevails. i learned on a xt600 and i wish i still had it.

that's my new thing, i'm gonna suggest dual-sports to everyone i can.

Just to clarify, this will not be my only bike. I just want something reasonable that I can learn on and gain experience from. I will sell it and upgrade at a later date. I just want something cheap so I won't care if I drop it or whatnot.

You can buy used and with a little TLC you can sell them for a good chunk what you bought them for.

I want an R1 but will wait until I have worn out my FZ6 or have pushed it to its limits and still hung on.
