So, Im really really noob about buy a bike, but I have read all the important things when buy the first bike, like check the suspension, brake, etc..

lets say i wanna buy a bike from a private seller and my questions are
-what is pink slip? is that some kind of important papers/document?
-are there any others important papers, like registration, that i should have or i should sign when i buy a bike from the previous owner?
-is there any procedure when buy a bike? like go to DMV to change the ownership.

thanks alot guys. :cheers

In CA a clean title (owner same as seller and no liens plus all the same info as on registration) consists of two parts. The title (pink slip as it was once pink) which is used to transfer ownership. The seller and buyer fill it out then the buyer takes it to the DMV to transfer ownership and register the vehicle in buyer's name. This is important for the buyer.

The other part of the form is the release of liability. The buyer and seller fill this out then the seller delivers the form to the DMV. This releases the seller from any further liability (parking tickets, accidents, etc.) and makes the buyer responsible. This is important for the seller to complete and file.

With a clean title, this is all straightforward to do with no other documents needed. Things get much more complicated if the seller still owes money on the bike or doesn't have a title in his/her name.

Unless the plate is personalized, the plate stays with the vehicle in CA. The registration may have some time left before it expires.

Hi RayOSV

so, pink slip is a document that me and the seller should fill out, as well as release of liability form.
is fill out both form can be done in one day?
when do people usually make the payment?

I just bought one. Had a friend go with me who knew a lot about bikes. All i did was pay the guy and he transferred the title to me. You need to get a safety inspection and then you go register it under your name at the dmv, you pay your tax there and get your plates.....

State laws and practices vary. If you don't know how it works in CA, please don't mis-inform the OP. There are no safety inspections in CA and usually no new plate needed.

The title (pink slip) document consists of two parts. It takes about 5 minutes to fill out both forms. Payment is usually made at the time the forms are filled out.

My point is that normal (non-personalized) plates stay with the vehicle. There is no need to get a new plate. One pays an annual license/registration fee for any vehicle. A vehicle you buy may have several months left on the current registration. This means that you don't have to pay the registration fee until the current registration expires. You will have to pay sales (use) tax on the purchase and a small registration transfer fee at the DMV.

As said you should get the certificate of ownership! DON"T settle for a bill of sale unless he goes to the DMV with you. You should verify the vin #s on the bike both the frame and engine #s. The registration should be current ? if not you will get hit with late fees which can add up. Their are no inspections in Cal unless it is a salvage title. If everything is Ok it takes 5 minutes for the seller to fill out the paper work and send you on your way with your new bike
