Well i never thought anyone was going to go after my little ninja 250 but i was wrong. Came out of my apt friday morning to go to class and to my disbelief my 2007 ninja 250 was gone. The thing that gets me the most is that a kid who live in my complex's R6 was a few spaces away untouched. I can only imagine they took mine since it was light enough to pick up and throw in the back of a truck. But any way got super f**ked cause i only had the bare minimum in insurance no comp so im not going to get a dime unless the cops find that shit, which lets be honest isnt going to happen. my baby was chopped into pieces before day broke:mad::mad::mad:

sorry to hear it man. that's absolutely terrible. hope the cops manage to find it, and best of luck.

if you can take slight solace knowing that the innermost circle of hell is reserved for bike thieves, i'd recommend doing so...

That sucks. Next bike I'm gonna bet you figure out some way to get full coverage. Even a $1000 deductible would have been less painful. Face it, bikes are easy to steal and that is why comp is so important to have. Hopefully some other rider without full coverage will read this and call their agent asap and figure out how to afford to add it on.

oh absolutely when i buy a new one its going to be fully covered. i bought the bike used for just over 2k and it had a good many miles on it thanks to me. As young as i am being on my own insurance policy i had to get what i could afford. i weighed the risks and didnt think that my bike was one that would be targeted by thieves only being a 250 not worth that much(considering all the more valuable bikes in my complex) it did have a lock on it but they more than likely just threw the whole thing into the back of a truck

Sorry to hear that as well, but you were asking for it to be stolen if you didnt bother to get full coverage. Why in the world would anyone not get full coverage? If your ok with your bike getting stolen, or you dont care if you crash it... then for for liability. Otherwise, get full coverage. Lesson learned?

But on a positove note I would be searching for parts on craigslist and ebay and even say that you want to buy parts. Specific parts. If you can recognize the parts of your bike then you can cqatch the theif.

The problem here is you underestimated a thief.

it's stupidly expensive.
The price to pay to keep your motorcycle safe. Would you be perfectly ok with someone stealing your bike and not getting anything out of it? As long as you dont mind losing whatever your bike is worth then go for liability. I wear all my gear to save my ass if I go down because im not ok with it if I go down and get torn up. If your ok with getting torn up, then go ahead and ride without your gear as well.

Sure it is expensive, but its a small price to pay to have that peace of mind. :cheers

The price of full coverage on inpayne's bike would probably surpass the bikes worth in a matter of months.

Insuring a 250 isn't necessary, either. I think the OP should have taken better precautions and not have been in the state of mind that a thief won't take his bike because it's not worth much.

That said, I'll keep full coverage on any bike I can't afford to replace out of pocket.

He will learn, but their's no reason to ream him a new one. A 2K dollar bike is not worth carrying full coverage on when you figure a $500-$1000 deductable, $500 for a years comp coverage. It adds up quick. Keep an eye out for parts on the local Craigslist, ebay
what have you... You never know what will show up

The bikes get stolen most are not the "most valuable" ones; indeed most of the high-dollar bikes get stolen less often because they are harder and more dangerous to fence. With bikes, as with cars, the ones that the thieves steal most are the ones that are the most common and thus the easiest to part out. A bike like the EX250, that was in production for a long time, is a very good candidate, as there is a large number of older ones out there that need parts.

To avoid bike theft:

a) Ride something too weird to steal. An MZ or a Royal Enfield or a Maico or something.

or:
b) Make sure if it has fairings that each major part has some visible damage, so they won't make much parting it out. :D

The higher end bikes are also more expensive and typically owned by guys in a bit higher income bracket. They are more likely to be kept in a garage and are more likely to be used as weekend toys versus a main form of transportation.

I know my Ducati has an immobilizer system that needs a key with a chip in it. Probably won't stop the pro, but maybe it will deter the amateur (one can always hope).
