Well, i ride with a small stunt group here in town and we have borrowed an xr50 for about a week from a friend. Another guy in the group bought a new one today so of course we wanted to ride it.

So i get to his house, get on the bike, and go down about 3 houses ridin a little wheelie with both feet down. i turn around, following my friend on the new 50. I look to the left and see a State Trooper stop at the stop sign (he lives probably 2 houses down from the stop sign), he gets out wearing his T-shirt and blue jeans and yells, "PARK IT NOW!" I was like "uhh, what?" He's like "PARK IT NOW OR ILL WRITE YOU A CITATION!" He really was in a pissy mood cuz his face looked like he was a drill seargent (sp?) and he sounded like he was yellin about ready to punch a hole through a window. So i drove off and rode in around the yard for 10 mins.

About 10 mins later, another KSP office drives by, goes to his house, stays for a few mins, and drives up to my buds house. we are are sittin the driveway workin on a new stunt bike we got and 2 damn troopers start up the driveway. They say they have gotten 4 calls about "wreckless motorcycle riding" and (there are probably 8-10 street bikes in a row) and we look at them and tell them, "we are just riding those little 50's, not the street bikes" so they pretty much say this is a warning, and next time, if they need to, they can have them "towed". WHAT A DICK! They say if it comes in contact with the street, it has to be licensed, insured, registered, etc etc..

Does a XR/CR50 have to be licensed, and tags and all that??? What about all these 12 year old kids riding scooters around?

BTW, if someone can find the actual laws on this, Im in Daviess County, KY

Yes. Of course it does. Any vehicle on the street has the same requirements. Licence, registration, insurance (if applicable). Has to have headlights, break lights, turn signals, etc. You just can't put a lawn mower engine into a go-kart frame and drive it to the damn mall. You can't go crusing around the loop in your Father's golf kart. They aren't street legal. Ever heard of "Street legal dirtbikes"? Know what makes them street legal? They have headlights, break lights, turn signals, mirrors...all the other components required by law. If a motor vehicle is operated on the streets it doesn't matter what it is. It must comply with the law.

Scooters, mopeds, all have to be licensed. If your state allows 12 year olds to obtain a permit to operate such a vehicle (which, I doubt), it's legal. If not, then you're mistaken and they aren't actually 12, they're 14, and DO have a permit to legally operate that vehicle. You're 20 years old and you're not familiar with what types of vehicles can be legally operated on city streets? You have to be kidding me. You're not the boy in the bubble, are you?

WHAT A DICK!
I think you're a dick for taking an unlicensed, illegal vehicle and riding wheelies down a residential street. The difference between my opinion and yours is that mine is right.

Actually, turn signals are NOT required here, and im talkin about a subdivision, not the damn "strip" or highway.

Thats obviously why I came here to ask the question about the laws. Read the title

I wouldnt have been upset it the guy wasnt such a bitch about it. He could have said, "hey pal, nice bike, but thats not legal for street use", NO, he had to be a dick about it.

It doesn't matter if it's a subdivision or a city alley, they're city/state roads and the laws apply. There aren't separate motor vehicle codes for the "strip" and residential streets.

Don't be ignorant of the law, don't break the law, and you don't have to worry about the officer and how he enforces the law; dick or not. He saw you screwing around on an illegal vehicle on public streets and it obviously upset him. As, it should.

Since i've been a kid, it's been OK for us to ride scooters around (at least subdivisions) without needing a license. Sometimes there are limits such as 2 brake horsepower, max speed of 30 mph, and engine size.

Ignorant about the law.... obviously thats what im tryin to find out, WHAT THE LAWS ARE, WHERE I CAN FIND THESE OUT.

You say OK to ride them Maybe it's been tolerated. But since a officer now lives near he doesn't like/want to tolerate it.
Public librarys generally carry law books. Some states web sites have info on them.

I regret to inform you that since you've been a kid, it has NOT been OK to ride scooters in subdivisions. The police probably just let you slide because you were kids. 20 year olds riding wheelies on the same vehicles isn't comparable.

A phone call to your City Attorney will clear up all your questions. Ask him. He'll tell you.

laws

um, im pretty sure in some states (like virginia), you can operate a vehicle on the road without having tags and all as long as its 49cc or smaller, and doesnt go above either 25 or 30 mph. and you dont need a license to operate them. i think you are suppose to be 14 or 16, but you dont have to have a license. however, if youre license has been revoked, you cant operate a vehicle like this. my buddy has a 50, and got like 12 tickets on it, then the cops found out in court that they were wrong, and they were all dropped. i dont know all the laws, but that was in charlottesville va. oh, and you cant operate non tagged vehicles on major highways.

Sorry. Read those statutes linked. Bikes designed for off road use are prohibited from use on public roads in KY except to cross the road, or if used in agricultural use. For shits and giggles plant a tomatoe plant in the yard and drive the bike in overalls and john deere hat.

I think most states you have to atleast be off the road way by 10'. unless like stated by f2Benny which you can cross the road and such. the wrath is right about over looking the kids on scooters, but in my area the parents is now getting the tickets for the kids. yes, old laws say you dont need turn siginals in some states but newer ones says you do so you can argue if its still on the books. but you must use hand signals. but still no tags and your busted. yeah the guy was a dick but you guys was in the wrong.

off topic
in my area to guys one 17 and one 20. was making a pop bottle bomb out of dry ice and bakeing soda. the 17 year old learned it from a experment in his senior chemistry class. they was doing these in a vacaint area near his house when a resdent down the street called the cops because conceren of the noise. the cop acted in the same way even after finding out what they was doing and useing. the 2 guys are been charged with unlawfully detnation of explosives and another law put in affect after 9/11. in the paper it said that the could get 5 to 20 years for it. it goes to court next month.

72Beetle summed up the local laws here fairly well. It's legal to ride a 49cc and less scooter on city streets without a helmet, license, registration, or insurance. There are limits to horsepower as well.

These scooters all have mirrors, lights, and signals, though. Plus they are quite a bit larger and more noticeable than a 50 dirt bike.

There really isnt anything you can do. Riding wheelies on a public road is considered reckless driving. As for the trooper. He wasn't on dutie there for could not write you up or enforce the law there for the other troopers stopped by and warned you legally. so you really cannot do anything. Best bet is to take it as a grain of salt and find some where else to stunt.

Everyone is pissed at the cop. Let me tell you, if I was a homeowner on that street with kids trying to play outside, and guys were flying up and down the street with loud dirtbikes, the cops would seem like your fairy godmother.

i have to agree with that, and i think parents have a good right to be concerned, kids dont pay attention to things well, and if one walked out in front of you while you were doing a wheelie or something, a little kid would get creamed, even just from a cr50
.
and the wreckless driving thing is a good point, as soon as a tired leaves the ground or breaks free and skids, it can be considered reckless driving, but at the same time, i dont know if that goes for vehicles that dont require tags and registration, not sure. especially since in a lot of states, you dont need to have a license to operate small scooters and what not.

oh, and the size thing, that is a good point to, but i know i checked in charlottesville, va (where i go to school), and the judge that i spoke with said that even little pocketbikes could be driven legally, just not at night since they dont have lights. and in va, turn signals are optional. in fact, as dumb as it sounds, a buddy of mine couldnt pass inspection because he had aftermarket turn signals (dont know where the inspector got that from) so he took them all off, went back, and the inspector had to pass him. go figure

Its different from state to state
Here , MOPEDS have to have a license and you must be a licensed driver ( we have a category on our licenses for Mopeds/scooters, but I wont go into how anyone at age 14 can get one when our local laws require you to be 16 at least and they are riding mopeds around ). It doesn't require insurance, but it must have headlight, signals and brake lights. Otherwise, illegal to drive on the road.
