What do you guys think would be a good motorcycle for a Courier business?

It will be ridden year round in a city environment.

DR-Z400SM sounds perfect to me :)

Bulletproof engine and it'll be a blast around town. Tall so you can see traffic well, and will be good on gas too.

Or, ninja 250 :)

wait you need 5 of them?
Don't most city-based couriers ride bicycles? Do you really want your motorcycle/scooter to be stuck in traffic? What if you can't find a spot to park it? Are you prepared to insure five motorcycles/scooters with multiple users in a metro area?

Get 5 nice Trek single-speeds and call it a day. Very little required maintenance, no insurance costs, no licensing, and cheaper to replace part or whole in case of damage.

DR650SE. Plenty powerful for a quick run up the freeway, rock solid durable, lower seat than most of the big dual sports, easy to maintain. Its also narrow and (sic) light enough to get around in traffic with little or no effort.

Twisted throttle and Sport tour show several options for luggage attachment.

Dirtbike-based engines are not designed or expected to rack up huge mileage. The big scooters, OTOH, are designed to be used as daily transportation and should hold up better. And again, the scooters generally have built-in lockable storage, and much better comfort and protection in inclement weather.

I disagree. The maintenance intervals on dirtbike engines are WAY too short for that kind of intensive usage.

I dont think bicycle couriers would work well in a town as spread out as memphis.

Buy some honda SH150i scooters and call it a day. The advantage of scooters is fuel mileage and storage space, but they cant handle high speed highways unless you get the big scoots like the suzuki burgman.

if you anticipate lots of highway and really want true motorcycles, maybe get SV's or kawasaki 650's. You can actually get lockable hard cases (givi) and tail racks for these bikes. ventura also offers large tail bags that you can mount to the subframe on a ventura rack.
I'd recommend an older ninja 250. Great gas mileage, reliable as all hell, cheap, tons of parts, and one of the best bike specific websites ever IMO Ninja250 Riders Club :: Index
The ninjette also had 4 folding hooks on the back plastic by the seat to help you hold stuff. With a spider bungee, I could hold just about anything.
Here is a badass link for peeps that have fabbed hard cases on it,,,,dammit wish I had seen that before I bought the SV :(
fabbing up givi racks on an <07 Ninja 250 - ADVrider
