Keep the conversation casual, don't ask too many personal questions, be yourself, and be honest. If you meet someone that you'd like to be friends with, maybe say something like, "you seem like a lot of fun. I'm always up for a ride/movie/windsurfing (fill in your own activity). Here's my number if you're interesting in hanging out. I'm not looking for a relationship - I simply like your company..." I know it sounds cheesy, but honesty goes a long way.
