Well my friend just bought a 1982 Suzuki GS450 earlier this year and well let me just say he is a complete idiot. Some of you might remember reading about him from my post in the helmet thread (he doesn't wear helmets and thinks anyone who is, a puss). Well he bought his GS450 with bald and dry rotted tires in which he put maybe 100 miles on them. He just recently put some new rubber and tubes on his bike and has maybe another 150 miles. He only has a grand total of 250 miles with the most at 350. All his miles so far have been on straight ass country roads and maybe a few curves. He also doesn't like curves and avoids riding with me since I ride on roads with curves.

Well he just told me he is going to buy a kawi z1000 during the coming winter months. I told him to his face he is a complete idiot and has barely rode his current bike and scrubbed his tires in. I have tried to convince him to not get a z1000 since he hasn't even came close to the limits of his bike. Also I told him of how a z1000 is so much different than his current bike and how he could out ride his abilities without trying. He has since told me he is getting a helmet and considering buying a jacket when he gets the z1000.

I don't know how to convince him to not buy the bike and have told him I won't ride with him if he does get it. I just hope I don't hear of him dying sometime next year due to a motorcycle crash.

You don't need to convince him. You gave your input, he denied. Let him learn from his own mistakes.

Not that it matters, because if curves scare him, then the absolutely ridiculous (in comparison to his current bike) torque on the z1k will scare him shitless.

give him a bid on his wrecked z1000.

You've given him your informed opinion; it's up to him now. Your range of action is to decide whether to ride with him, and/or whether to stay friends with him. (Why are you friends with someone you think is "a complete idiot" anyway?)

I did face a sort of similar situation a few years back -- a guy I knew at work, and was sort of friends with, who rode like a madman, and also rode drunk fairly often. I tried to persuade him, I tried to see if I could get him into treatment. He refused to change his behaviors (which was his right), and I chose to back off and let him go his own way, because I didn't want to become collateral damage, nor did I want to experience the pain of becoming a close friend just to lose him to his own predictable behavior. He later committed suicide. A real bummer, but there was nothing I could have done about it; I tried, and he was just not open to it.

... animosity and preachiness don't work, unless you're a woman who's sleeping with the guy.
And they don't even work very well then, either.

It sounds like he's already scared of the bike if he's actually purchasing a helmet and jacket. I don't think he's going to last long with motorcycling.

I asked if I could buy his z1000 when he wrecks it lol. He just said he'll fix it with dealer parts and ride it again.

Me and this guy have known each other for almost 18 years. The guy is practically family since both our families are close and all. He is normally pretty smart but I don't know what has happened to his judgment. He still only has his permit and hasn't even take the MSF course in which Ive told him to take to get his license. I guess Ive done all I can do and will hate to hear about him getting hurt or worse losing his life when he goes down but its his choice. I hope he learns from his mistake before he loses his life and maybe gives me his bike when he dumps it

Stop with the warnings. He heard what you had to say. He's not taking the advice, so let him get killed.

And if it survives and could still use his brain. He'll know... you told him so.

Point him towards Unreal's "R6 first bike" thread. I understand we each ride our own ride, but the sheer ignorance that comes with some of those"rides" is astounding! How can people not see the inherent danger that is right in front of them? Oh well, I sincerely hope he smartens up, so he can truly enjoy what being on 2 wheels brings to your life

well if he buys the bike, you can do 1 of two things criticize him for a bad choice or try to help him become a better rider. if you talk shit about him, you are no better then him.

Have a friend in a similar situation. Bought an FZ6 as a first bike about 2 months ago...put 1k miles on it...1/2 of which was highway. Now with the great deals on 08 CBR1000 he is thinking about moving up. New dad, new rider and unaware that his skills need a LOT of work before getting on that bike......offered my thoughts and wished him luck if he decides to move up. He will need it.

It's going to be tough for this guys trying to find roads that don't have curves in them. Damn most of the freeways have curves here lol.

Ask him to tell you your a puss after he smacks his head on something hard when he dumps his bike and see if he has a mind changes.

Some people have a bit of common sense. Some don't. Maybe that bike will scare the shit out of him, maybe it won't. Maybe he will take to it like a duck to water, chances are he won't. You tried to give him some advise, the rest is up to him. All you can do now is make sure he doesn't take you out when he runs off the road.
