Me and my girlfriend recently discovered this on a long road trip and I thought I would share.

Driving north on I-25 we passed what I'm guessing was a couple (50-60 year old man and woman) on separate bikes, both with these training wheels attached. I had never heard of anything such as this. Are they common? Also, how does one take a corner with these attached?

I've never seen that before. I guess it would be cheaper than doing a full "trike" conversion. The effect would be the same, it wouldn't lean; you'd steer it into the corners like a three-wheeler or a sidecar rig, instead of countersteering like a motorcycle.

so you're sure those were bolted on with the original rear wheel still there? Could it have been a trike?

Training wheels would make it a 4 wheeled vehicle and hence a car, with all the licensing rules that entails. Sounds like a legal morass to me.

There are a couple guys near where I live that have those. One is on a Goldwing and the other is on a Harley with windshield and soft bags. As far as I can tell they are a cheap way of making a trike. Makes no sense to me and looks really ghetto.

BTW. is it still a trike since it has 4 wheels?

It would probably be cheaper to buy a used Mazda Miata.

I don't know about cheaper, but gayer for certain.

Wow, I can't imagine the ridicule hurtled at that dude.

Real training wheels would have a bit of angle to them so that each would be off the ground when going straight.

Gah, what-ever.

From the website:

* A conventional trike has 0 degree lean into a turn because they have a solid rear end. With the Voyager Conversion attached to your motorcycle you will be able to lean 6-12 degrees depending on the motorcycle that is attached to the Voyager Conversion Kit. Cruiser motorcycles will lean 6 degrees and your larger touring motorcycles will lean up to 12 degrees. A regular two wheel motorcycle without a trike or a Voyager Conversion Kit attached will lean up to 45-60 degrees in a turn.

Advantages of the Voyager Conversion kit:

* No more front end push or wheel slip on turns
* No more front end shake at high speeds
* No more narrow escapes in cross winds or on winding
mountain roads while towing a trailer

When passing them it was easy to see the original wheel was indeed still intact. Seems to me like they would just take a lot out of riding, but to each his own I guess.

An older friend bought a used cruiser with a training wheel setup attached that was rigid (cheap) and I was asked to ride it home for her.

Thats the closest to death I have ever been on a motorcycle. It wanted to tip over in every turn including a turn from a stop. I convinced her to sell the thing right away and get something else.
