I'm thinking about upgrading the single disc on my Buell X1 to something with more power, but want to add as little weight as possible.

Anyone have any idea what bike would have the lightest front wheel and brakes at the moment? The Buell ZTL2 (perimeter disc) is meant to be very light, but the latest CBR1000RR and CBR600RR look light too, and Honda claim the wheels are lighter than the previous models... :dunno

cheers,
chili

you cant put standard wheels and brakes on a buell, unless you take forks triple trees from a conventional style bike and even then youd probably need custom work for the stem. Youd probably need forged magnesium or maybe forged alum. rims to be lighter than buell rims. Buell rims are light because they can cut material because all breaking force is on the outside edge of the rim, and not being transfered from the center/hub to the edge. Different pads or master cylinder might give you a little better performance, otherwise the choices are pretty limited to getting a different bike, or developing your own braking technique to a more advanced level.

Good luck, if you plan on trying to switch out the front-end please post pics, especially in-process pics if possible.

Why different triple clamps? Because the Buell ZTL setup has the forks closer together?

I understand how and why the Buell system is lighter, but I'm trying to find by exactly how much. The newer ZTL2 system on the 1125's and later XB's uses an 8-piston caliper which would have to be heavier than the original 6-piston. There is now a thicker (heavier) rotor available as well. At the same time some of the conventional twin disc setups have got lighter, but I can't find any hard data on actual weight of any of them.

My bike is a pre-ZTL Buell with conventional 6-piston caliper and 340mm rotor. There are conversion kits for changing to twin 320mm rotors and 4-piston calipers.

Carbon would wheels would be very, very cool, but lots of $$$! It would be nice to have actual numbers to find out the real weight saving.

If you have $2-3 grand, check out carbon fiber Marchesini's.
- Had no idea Marchesini made CF wheels, can't seem to google it.

I'd recommend BST CF wheels and Braketech CMC ceramic rotors.

PS this is our shop bike and yes those are superbike forks.

Okay, I 'KIND' of know what I'm looking at here, and just an off-the-cuff estimate; that pic looks like it's worth somewhere in the $8500-$1100 range. More Bling than Street, but for a display bike; awesome. I've ridden a carbon'd out setup like that before (rotors, wheels) on the track. The turn-in is CRAZY. Feels like you're riding on ball-bearings. The lack of centrifugal weight makes the bike 'fall' over. Nice Stuff.

These parts you see in the picture are pure function. They may look flashy but they are there for the performance.

As for the price well;

Front BST: $1715usd
CMC Rotors: $2250usd
Brembo HP Nic-Cad Calipers - $1800usd
Titanium Axle - $690usd
QD Brake lines - $890usd
FRG900 WSBK Forks - $13149.00 usd
Front Fender - $295usd
Custom Fender Brackets $99usd
Ferodo XRAC Pads $98.95usd.

Total:20985.95usd

That is just the cum of the parts in that picture. Nevermind the custom triple clamp. The plethora of titanium bolts on the front end and the list goes on. You will be hard pressed to find a bike with more high end functional parts on it anywhere.

I purchased my fz6 back in feb of last year and have put 9,000 miles on the bike since then commuting everyday. It has been stock since i bought it and I love it's versatility and power but I hate the way the stock exhaust sounds. When I ride with other bikes with aftermarket exhausts I get jealous even though most can't leave me sitting. I have found myself leaning toward the two brothers or the M4 undertail exhausts, question is does any one have any suggestions on which they think not only has the best sound but the best value for the buck considering I have found where I can get either for around the same price???
