What would you guys think if the State allowed riders to split lanes in North and South Carolina? Before you answer, check out this video from Ride Apart on the DRIVE YouTube channel.

Personally I think the State should allow us to split lanes. However, if they did/do, there will have to be a huge public service announcement campaign to inform car drivers, bicycle riders and police officers of the policy change.

Initially there will certainly be some accidents due to drivers not being use to the new policy. On the other hand, I think it will reduce car on car and car on motorcycle accidents in the long run, because it will force drivers to turn their heads, look over their shoulder and to use their mirrors when changing lanes.

What are you thoughts?

When I lived in Charleston I never had the need, could be useful in Raleigh-Durham though...even Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune for the morning rush to the gate
