I am converted. I always buy used and my bikes have always come with aftermarket exhaust already installed. This is my first quiet bike.

Granted, its not a sport bike, but it sure is refreshing to be able to leave a light with enough oomph to lift the front tire while making so little noise people don't even turn their heads. Get up to 120 passing a couple cars on a country road? just a woosh instead of formula 1 scream. Life changing. Every bike I own from here on out is going to be as quiet as possible. What is the point in having a high performance anything and turning it into an attention / cop magnet that rats you out every time you get on the gas?

Now I just need to get my supermoto quiet so I can play on it too.

So what bike did you get anyway?
Big ol fat ol cruiser. VTX1800. Not so sporty but its growing on me as a commuter (my commute is mostly highway). Yes it will wheelie in first or if you shift into second hard ;)

I can understand the stealth thing, because I don't necessarily believe that loud pipes save lives (although even a possibility of a chance of somebody noticing it is better than no chance).

My problem with stock exhausts is this, though. First, they're crazy restrictive with all the EPA regulations these days, and depending on the bike, the fueling from the factory sucks. I just finished fixing all this on the R1, and if the bike ran from the factory like it runs NOW, the crossplane R1 wouldn't be at the bottom of every magazine shootout.

Second, depending on the bike and its placement, catalytic converters can be miserable from the heat.

I agree about the restrictive part, but with the price of an exhaust and programmer being what they are, I would rather just buy a bike with the power I want off the show room floor. EX: if I was going to buy a 600 but thought it would need an exhaust to get it where I want it to be power wise, I would buy a 636, 675, or 750. I get the need and desire to modify something and make it better, I'm usually the guy dropping in cams, getting porting and high compression pistons, etc... but for a street only toy the reduction in the ability to have fun is not worth the % of power gain from an exhaust.

The exception being the crossplane R1s. They just sound toooo good with a nice set of pipes. With all of the 1000s being so close, and basically identical within street sane speeds, I would probably pick the R1 above the others on sound alone.

Meh, aftermarket pipes LOOK amazing, breathe better, and generally weigh a HELL of a lot less. Especially if you ditch the cat.

I don't like them REALLY loud, but a little louder than stock isn't bad. I will agree that I don't like the attention of having louder pipes, though.

Not only that, but they have a LOT to gain by doing an ECU flash. I had ECUnleashed do mine, and its a completely different bike. Very smooth, and very strong throughout the rev range. And I got rid of a ton of the heat with the catless midpipe. Its a shame these bikes come so restricted from the factory, because it really is something after just a few tweaks.

My Tuono is the first bike I've had with aftermarket pipes, I love the beautiful sound they make, but I keep the baffles in because I work all kinds of hours and don't want to wake up the whole neighborhood every day.

The downside, is that this exhaust system changes my exhaust from dual side mount to dual underseat, so a lot of aftermarket parts won't work because, the exhaust changed so much of the bike's architecture so to speak.

People look at me weird because I still have the stock pipe on my zx6r. I really don't care though... I don't need the performance increase considering it's more than enough bike already, I don't think the stock pipe looks bad, and I have better things to spend my money on.

When you break down the cost per HP not worth it.

On average...2 - 5 Hp gain at the most with todays bikes + aftermarket exhaust.

10yrs ago, yeah I've seen 10hp but not so much today.


If the bike runs lean in a spot then put a PC on it.

Catalytic converters do hold that heat that does suck for sure if its close to the rider.


Yep the older I get the least attention I want so I can slip by the popo.

For a 600RR I don't think I'd have a problem keeping the stock exhaust, or even the OP's mentioned VLX1800, that thing just doesn't sound right with an aftermarket exhaust on it, for some reason.

However, a V4 or V-twin sport bike? To me, that thing has to be unleashed. Not stupid D&D pipes loud, but it's gotta be made to growl/howl.

The other arguments are good, too. Especially if you go for the full exhaust as some of the stupid amounts of weight saved, along with some hp/tq picked up, is very tempting. I'm talking more about the 520lb+ bikes for that statement. My friend's Magna 750 and my old ZZR1200 were, and his still is until spring, choked the shit out of running lean, so much so that as LP_MR says it's a damn different bike without flat spots and shit in the powerband...especially that Magna below 4500.

As far as cops? I don' think they make them in WV and OH where I ride. I've seen about 6 all season. More so in PA, but those back roads aren't exactly prime targets around here.

Too expensive when you are talking 400 bucks for a slip on and mid pipe its too rich for my blood. Plus I've dont pipes before and nah, not really into it anymore.

I still have my stock can. I wouldn't mind a slip-on but my money goes towards my race bike so it's just not worth it. I did -1F, speedo healer, and set valve removal and I am happy with it.

Yes they do. Honestly I think its probably why the bike didn't sell well and was discontinued. You know how important sound is to cruiser people. IMO the bike could sound good with an exhaust designed more like that of a sport twin. Something wider with more glass in it that takes out the high pitched and glug glug stuff instead of trying to look like a straight pipe... but it will never sound like a Harley since it has two crank pins. Honda should have known cruiser people would rather have a good sound than more power and less vibes.

I used to hate loud pipes. Now, I like them. I go through phases. Straight pipes on my Harley were way too much.
