Gotta give some more information, it makes it easier to classify the spyware you have so you can get a remover for it. Is it the same site every time? Does it only happen when you use a certian prog? For Example i once had adware that would reroute whatever url i typed in and send me to some site to search for the page i wanted. Same site every time. Thats how i found the remover. Id be happy to help if you could provide a little information.

Generally speaking, anti-virus software has no effect on adware/spyware. You should go to www.download.com and find Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. Install both, download the most recent definitions, and scan your PC. Use Adaware first, Spybot second. This should take care of all or almost all spyware/adware. You may also want to post up what (if any) file sharing program you are using since those programs cause the most problems and you may lose their use by clearing the adware/spyware. Post here or send me a PM with any questions.

You don't want both AdAware and Spybot running on the same computer. Spybot works by creating "blank" files in the spots that spyware normally downloads to...that way, the spyware software thinks it's already installed on the computer and doesn't download it's stuff.

AdAware will very often remove those components of Spybot, and then that spyware can install itself on your computer.

Use Spybot, it's the best spyware software out there. I used AdAware for a LONG time. Ran it one night, still having problems...so I went and downloaded Spybot...no problems ever since.

And there are certain things that even ad removal software won't fix. Some of them are VERY big pains in the ass...especially if you get some scripts or something. Then you have to do a bunch of manual shit to get rid of them.

You're absolutely right about Adaware not working well with Spybot in their standard configurations. When you install Spybot, it will recognize AdAware, and will let you know that the 2 programs won't work well together unless you disable archive scanning in AdAware. By doing so, AdAware will not find the files that Spybot generates. Also, I've found that Spybot will find things that AdAware misses, and vice versa, that's why I use and recommend both. But, that's just what works on my computers. Your results may vary. :grinbounc

sorry, this is OT, but recently, i had a Virus that i think was spyware and re-directed every webpage that i tried to get to to some porn site. I used ad-aware to remove files but that didn't work, so i downloaded spybot, the scan was free, and it took 2 hours, but they wanted 40$ to delete files. Instead i just backed up and formated C:/

Worked well for me. spyware/adware/hijackers suck, Why would anyone want us to suffer like that?

Make sure you still use your virus scanner along with Ad-aware and spybot.. A lot of the more dangerous adware programs will be installed from a trojan virus loaded onto your computer. Ad-aware will remove the adware program, but not the trojan.. the trojan will just replace whatever you removed.

Yah, that's a script. It's a pain in the butt to find, but a decently easy fix. But none of the ad removal programs do it.

Adaware is good for removing malicious cookies. Spybot doesn't remove these cookies so I run both programs. One to get rid of the Spyware and one to get rid of history logging cookies.

I just had the same damn problem. Ad ware :boid I couldn't get online, it just kept taking me to a sweepstakes page and Comcast sent me emails and called me stating that someone had been also sending millions of emails and all from my computer. I ended up wiping the whole system out and putting in windows xp with lots of virus programs and all. Thanks to my buddy who is in the comp business!...Now everything is running smooth and fast.

Are you saying that Spybot wanted you to pay $40 to delete the files? Spybot is free, and runs on donations. Plus, it's never taken more than 5 minutes to scan my entire system, and I've got a 160 GB HD. What you tried sounds like another spyware program that gets you to install it claiming to remove other spyware. Sorry that happened to you.

Spybot removes all of the history logging cookies on my computer.

It goes right in there and says "Tracking Cookie" when it removes them...not sure what version you have that doesn't remove malicious cookies...
