Take care of it properly (especially oil and filter changes) and 100K-200K isn't out of the question. If it's only 40K, I've only got 4 K left in my "00 sv. :lame

+1...Not counting factory defects/recalls, there's no reason a well maintained bike can't go over 100,000 miles...Todays oils are so advanced, that when they do tests to check engine wear, there's usually minimum, if it's been properly serviced...

Valves are a different story, but they're alot easier to take care of than a blown engine...
Mine has 25k on it and still running strong...
15-20 years unless wrecked. Most bikes never see thier potential milage. But lifespan is potentially many more miles since the advent of modern metallurgy and water cooling.

Back in the day, Fierospeeder would have posted a curious argument against this. How nice.

Especially that bike...There are two near me that I know of personally...One has 84,000 and looks brand new...The other has somewhere around 50,000 and is also in top condition...

+1... my 96 has 20,000 my old 96 Smoke'n Joe's rep had almost 30,000 when I sold it, and my 98' 900RR had about 13,000 before I wadded it.. ooops! take care of um, they'll can last forever. RIDE RED!!
one of my riding buddies had a gsxr1100 w/about 90k on it and it still looks nice.
20,000 miles on the yamaha and runs better every day.
My first bike was a 88' Suzuki Katana 600. I bought it with 29,000 miles and sold it with about 30,500 on her. Still ran and rode like new. Getting over 100,000 on todays bikes is certainly possible if they're taken care of.
