I see people posting on here saying that "such and such ticket is 2 points" or whatever, so I was just wondering exactly how that's determined, and if anyone knows the system for texas.

Can't answer the specifics for Texas (check their DMV web site), but in general:

tickets -> points -> insurance increases

Different infractions count for different number of points, the more serious the more points.

Too many points in some time period -> lose your license

Way too many points -> go to jail

Over time (years), points "go away" so that if you behave youself you can eventually get back to zero.

It's really quite simple.

To many points, you loose your license... simple as that. Some states you have up to 12 points to lose, others 15-20. I don't know about here in Ky tho, havent been pulled over for a ticket **knocks on wood**

I've gotten one ticket, which wasn't fair! I was adjusting my radio going with the flow of traffic and I didn't see him, I wasn't even trying to speed that time. But it's not on my record. so no points yet!

Here in NM I believe we get 12 points and a big ticket like going double the speed limit will net ya a hefty 8 or so. So all you have to do then is get a ticket for 4-5 over (some anal jurisdictions'll do it) and you've maxed your card so to speak. I think you have to wait 2 yrs to clear em. Obviously there are safty classes that you can take at your expense to get rid of the points that way, but you can only take em so many times before youre outta luck. :( Think of it as golf, the less points ya have the better. :)

In most states you can go to traffic school every so often (in CA every 18 months if need be) and keep points from minor stuff off your record.

Colorado has a 12 point per year limit, or 17 points in two years. Violation means suspension of your license. Problem is that they've jacked up the points for even minor traffic violations so high that 12 points is easy to get. A U-Turn in the wrong spot can get you 4 full points- much less the speeds at which sport bikes seem to get nailed for. I got 4 points for 17 over the speed limit.
To boot, around here the law dropped the speed limit from 30 to 25 and are going ticket crazy for people going like 28 mph.
We also just dropped the BAC level to .08 to cash in on federal money.

That's what it's all about around here- the money they can rake in on tickets. nevermind the violent crime and drug pushers at the jr. high schools- we need more cops collecting hemorroids in cars and handing out tickets for a U-Turn..........................now I feel safe.
