Just got a brand new 06 with 1 mile on it when i bought it, i've put 200 on it in 5 days, I love it! The only thing is im worried about the break in process. The moron salesman at the dealer told me i could put 89 octane in it, i guess a sales pitch to make me think i'd be saving more money. Well after my first fill up of 89 octane it started knocking like hell. I think i saved it with some octane booster and a fill up of 93 but other then that i dont think i've taken it over 9500 rpm and only that high once maybe twice. How exactly should i take care of my bike for a break in process?

I was told to keep the revs to under 7000 (if I could) until the 1st service at 600 or so miles. Certainly not to keep revs over 7000 for prolonged periods.

Other than that standard unleaded fuel (95 ron for us, 98 ron is 'ultra' unleaded for performance, and usually about 5-10pence per litre more expensive.

Do you have a manual to read??? I think its 6000 to 600 mi. & 8000 to 1000 mi. if I remember correctly. The more you follow it the tighter it will remain for longer. But its your bike, everybody does it their own way regardless of the Mfg.'s reccomendations. Protect your investment, Or not. Not another break-in thread...

95 and 98? damn you get some good fuel in UK, the best i can get here is 93....
Yeah, but we're paying for it through the nose (well, at 90-95p per litre some 70% of that is tax, of some form, going to the Government pockets).

For those UK'ers out there, read this and sign up for cheaper fuel - www.PipelineCard.org - only avialable to people who have signed up to become a member (they might stop taking members when they have an agreement for cheaper fuel, so be warned!!)

Break-ins have been covered considerably. Utilize the "SEARCH" function.

Summary, there is no set way to break in the bike. Some say vary RPMs no matter what. Others say nothing over 8K for 1000 miles. Read the other posts and make your own call.

read the april issue of motorcyclist it has info on how to break in the new bike. it says to not worry bout the specific tach readings and just gradually bring it up to red line. interesting reading.

Octane rating for the UK is different from the US. Uk uses the RON, (Research Octane Number) and the US applies the (R+M)/2 method, [(Research Octane Number + Motor Octane Number) divided by 2].

UK's 95 is US's 89 octane. Uk's 98 is US's 93 octane.

my dealer told me the engine was bullet proof, don't worry about it.

So I don't.
So you guys arent using premium?

I put one fill up of 89 octane and my motor was knocking and ticking like a 70's ford, since i put the octane booster and filled up on premium it sounds healthy again..

Hahaha. I use 87 pump octane and the bike runs like a champ. It's designed to work with 87 pump octane, check you rmanual.

If your bike seems to require premium fuel, I'd say something's amiss. The FZ6 is an average streetbike, it doesn't need premium fuel.

Yamaha manual says 87 octane. I usually use mid-grade (89) just b/c it makes me feel good lol.
If it is knocking horribly on 87 octane, I would say something is not correct with the bike, or where you filled it, the gas was not good. Either way, something to look into I should think.

I got my bike used. So I just prayed that the break in was done right. Also I got it from a reputable dealer so I know it was checked out.

The book says. First 600 miles keep it under 7k. Change the oil. Then keep it under 9k until you hit 1000 miles. Then your engine is broken in.

I have been putting 87 in since I got the bike. So far 1400 miles and not a single issue.

my dealer said anything over 89 octane (US) is a waste of money in this engine. his other tip: miles 0-200, under 5000 rpm; miles 201-400 under 6000 rpm; miles 401-600, under 7000 rpm
dont listen to him.

If its pinging on regular gas .You should have your dealer check it out for ignition timing...computer electronics ....Then...change your oil and filter at 500 miles and ride it like you stole it ........................ :fiddy

I think it's pretty much the same engine, but we broke in my brother's R6 by just constantly winding it through most gears and never staying at the same speed. About a 300 mile highway ride and then he did some on his own. It's that infamous hard break-in. It seemed to work well though, the bike runs great now, 3000 miles later and doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon.
