I'm getting ready to repaint some rooms around the house and theres quite a few holes, dents, and other miscellaneous obstructions. Whats the best and most cost effective way to patch the holes and prepare the walls to be repainted? Just cut a hole and replace the drywall and mud over it?

Yup, you'd be surprised by how different an old beat up drywall can look after a good coat of plaster and some paint. I live in a 60 year old home that had bumpy walls, old wallpaper, holes, etc... and all the other wear 'n tear you would expect in a home that's older than everyone on this board aside from Smitty. A couple of weekends of laying down plaster and sanding had those walls looking pretty smooth.

Cut a hole? Unless you have some severe damage I think that you can just sand, patch over just about anything. Even big lumps, like I have, can be smoothed over or simply hidden with a coat of flat color.

If the hole is about the size of your fist, you can get sheets of this self adhesive webbing that you cut to fit. It is just this plastic material. If the hole is big, these sheets come in squres with a metal material that adds support. Just sand around the hole to get a good flat surface , apply the webbing then apply 1 coat of plaster to cover the patch and surrounding area. You will probably still have a sunken area where the hole was. Once this layer dries, you can sand down the area, doesn't have to be perfect, then apply the second coat of plaster to fill in the sunken area and make all other surfaces even. Once this dries, sand all areas to the same, smooth level.

^ What he said. Thats what I've seen done by my dad many times over through the years while growing up as a kid from various things such as baseballs in the house and other dumb reasons. :eek:nfloor

Painting sucks though. We were going to do the whole house but we did 2 small bedrooms and the bathroom and then hired someone to do the rest, especially the high cielings. Cielings are worth doing though, you wouldn't think so until you did them, they naturally get dirty you don't notice until you paint em.
